It's not hard to see where the Tamron might 'outdo' the Canon in the telezoom category, but there are plenty of reports (TDP for example) that note that the AF of the Tamron isn't quite up to snuff when pushed hard, i.e. low light action using servo. The Tamron is also shorter than the Canon and weakest at it's long end, while the Canon is longer and sharp at the long end.

I was fairly set on the Canon, personally- but this new Tamron 'ultra-zoom' is giving me second thoughts. Both Tamrons would cost slightly more than the Canon alone, on sale, before teleconverters.

For an amateur, that makes the decision pretty easy

I'm almost ready to pre-order the thing. Most of my field sports work is done on my 70-200 IS II with 1.4xTC and the Tamron weighs a few ounces more but offers twice the reach. With my 1DX I can easily adjust ISO for the f6.3 and put more pixels on target. So far the examples seem to show that it's a good match with a 100-400 and an older 300/2.8 with TC. That's pretty high quality for $1000 IMO.

Yep. I'd much rather cart this thing onto a plane, than the 300/2.8L IS or 500/4L IS. I expect it'll have compromises in at least a few performance areas, but that could be quite alright, depending on the details.

Anyway, I'll wait to decide until after production lenses have been acquired and evaluated by trusted FM members. So far, it looks pretty darned good. OTOH, that was my original take on the Sony A7R, and now I've decided to wait for an A7R release with EFCS, or a new, high pixie EOS body from Canon. I've done enough early-adoption in the past three years; I can wait a bit this time.

I'm with you on this one Jim. I also held off on the A7r (actually cancelled my preorder) and went Fuji instead. Couldn't be happier with that decision. I also have the Tamron on order but I'm thinking about cancelling that also until I see more user reviews. I'm saving up for the 200-400 anyways before November when I go to Antarctica and my plan is to make that my only lens or camera purchase in 2014......we will see how that goes over

+1 went with Fuji and it has been one of my best decisions. I will wait for others to try the Tamron first.

Give Norman Camera a call in Kalamzoo Michigan and ask for Pat, tell him I told you to call 269-343-0460, these folks have supplied many high end lenses and equipment to FM members and are very reputable and friendly.

At this point they have several on order and are expecting them in to ship by 17th I am told and yes, I am first on their list

Just another proven vendor to work with if you want to get on the 'short list'

600mm puts 44% more pixels on the subject. If you still have to crop heavily I'd rather have 2.9MP than 2MP on my subject say.

I wonder how many of these I'll be seeing after a few months. Definately a budget photographers dream lens. But at least it'll be hand holdable. You'll be able to carry it a few miles.
On searches here for Snowy owls, especailly at the long beaches. I constantly see the big white canon lenses with there large tripods limited to the boardwalks and next to the road.
Now with a 100-400 or this lens I can walk all the way down the beach, and actually get to the birds, rather than hoping they'll get to me instead.
Last week a couple of regular guys I see at the sanctuary all the time had walked in from the road, and you could see they were just plain tuckered out after slogging through the snow and ice. I stopped by and they asked If I had seen any owls. I tod them I had covered quite a distance and hadn't seen any. But they both said it was too heavy and slippery to be hauling those around. I asked why they didn't come down to the beach and both said the sand made it too difficult to walk. I also mentioned that near the top where the ice and snow was it was still hard packed. Both of them agreed maybe next time, but they were both too tired.
A lot to be said for lighter equipment, and better fitting boots !

Oh I realize that and I do agree....there is a reason I own the 600 and not the 500. I just thought it was a bit interesting to see that the overall image didn't look that much more zoomed in....however, probably or actually with certainty this lens is not hitting a true 600 anyways. Even the official specs showed it at a bit less.

I'm still young enough to haul the 600mm II and tripod around where needed. Guess it depends on physical abilities. For day hikes and slogging up hills, the 400DO shines.

I think it's supposedly around 580mm at infinity, which is pretty good if true.

Look at my comparison between Sigma 150/2,8 macro and Canon EF 400/5,6L versus Tamron 150-600 (with Canon 5d2). There are also some "real world" photos for those who prefer this way of testing

I guess I read at least one post too many on this and the other thread on this lens. Just placed my pre-order with Adorama. If it proves to be a good one, it will probably displace my EF-400 5.6. We will keep our hopes up for this lens providing that extra reach at a moderate cost.

Will probably keep the 100-400 for kayaking and as a lighter option.

Any speculation on the quality to expect with a 1.4X III on a 5DIII for 840mm?

why would you try and add a 1.4X TC to an F6.3 lens?
you would be beyond F8 and have only manual focus
zooms are never great with a TC
TC are never great with slow lenses

seems the point of the Tamron 150-600 is that you get 600 without a TC

There are always the eternal optimists that will slap a TC on any lens and expect stellar results.

They don't seem to comprehend the image degradation, slower AF, and loss of light.
