As an antidote to all of the emphasis on ultimate sharpness and high micro-contrast etc., what are your experiences and opinions out there on the 'best' Nikkors for producing cinematic, artistic flare? Thinking of lenses in the wide-normal to short telephoto range of 35-135mm that produce interesting veiling effects and cool internal reflections. A typical application could be portraiture with a vintage cinematic style, and low contrast look, such as when heavily back lit or shot into the sun.

No Nano coated lenses need apply - seems like older, single coated lenses with simple optical formulas would be ideal. What have you used to deliver such an effect?

Not a Nikkor but the Zeiss 50/1.4 is the most off beat lens available for Nikon. It is also the cheapest ZF and most easily obtained used. Wide open it borders on the bizarre.

55 f1.2, 35f1.4, 85 f1.8 (all non-ai) come to mind. (Wish i never sold my 55 f1.2!)

135 f2 DC as well (though that is newer, and a pretty penny)

Interesting question! The modern AF-S 70-200/2.8 VR1 can deliver really cool flare and ghosting.

A Nikkor-SC Auto 50/1.4 with damaged coatings:

about f/2

Nikkor-H Auto 85/1.8 at about f/2.8

Don't know if the examples above qualify as "cinematic".

55 1.2 S (maybe with the multi-coating on the SC version that doesn't flare as much).

for SLR's:

The 5.8cm F1.4 Nikkor-S. I need to use mine on the Df. It's on the F Photomic Bullseye now.

The 55/1.2 SC and Ai- never noticed flare. Even the 55/1.2 Nikkor-S has low flare, Nikon started multicoating them in 1969- but did not mark them "SC" until later.

For rangefinder cameras: The Nikkor-SC 5cm f1.4.

OR- buy a Deckel mount to F-Mount adapter, and pick up some classic Schneider glass made for the Kodak Retina S series.

The later 50/1.9 with the 52mm filter ring focuses to 2ft.

The 85/1.4 flares nicely into light.

Thanks! It was shot at f/2.8. Colors and contrast were boosted in post.

Another example of the Nikkor-H Auto 85/1.8:

The 24/2 is temperamental in terms of bokeh, flare and ghosting too:

Ai-Nikkor 24/2, SB-800 on a mini-tripod to get some wild flare and ghosting

Wow!! That shot is positively Hollywood! Do you get these kinds of results with that Nikkor-H Auto 85 consistently? That is some nice looking flare on that bad boy...

Well, I just looked at the other shots from this concert and this kind of ghosting only shows up on some images. But I'm sure it's possible to squeeze out "artistic flare" out of this lens. It's probably just a matter of a careful placement of a strong back-light-source.
For a long diagonal row of small ghosts a zoom-lens with many elements is probably the better choice.

I don't know which lenses you already own, put experimenting with a small LED-torch some meters behind your subject might force your lenses to show artistic flare.

Going through 54,000 photos in Lightroom, I found about 100 that had some kind of interesting flare, most of them from my old 18-70 AF-S on the D70, and with the sun directly in the frame. My problem is an obsession with top-flight glass and Nano coating, so I've basically protected myself from the one thing I want to experiment with at the moment!

The Nikkor-H 85mm f/1.8 looks like a very nice lens, but doing a little research, I came across the Nikkor-Q 135mm f/3.5. 4 elements and 3 groups, single coated and a huge air gap, and a reputation for extreme flare! Ordered an EX+ copy off of KEH today for well under a hundred bucks shipped.

Hope to have it by the end of next week - will post some examples if I can coax it into bad behavior!

60 year old Nikkor 13.5cm F3.5, Leica Screw Mount version. Same optical formula as the F-Mount version.

Wide-Open, strong back-lit subject.

Just remembered, the 20 3.5 UD. The first time I looked through it into a bright scene there were green ghosts dancing everywhere and many of them appeared in the photo. Will see if I can dig out the pic.

Georg, that first one is exceptional!

I have the 13.5cm F mount version, and haven't noticed flare much in it either. Will check it out more.

Tried the Nikkor-H Auto 85/1.8 this evening while waiting for a show to start (shot the performance with another lens).
The Nikkor-H delivered really cool and "artistic" flare. Will try this lens maybe on a crop-sensor-body to get a larger ghosting-circle.
Btw, key to get "nice" flare with this lens is a tiny, yet very powerful lightsource.

Ugly test-shot, very cool flare - Nikkor H 85/1.8 at f/2.8 (hood, but no filter used) on a FX-Nikon
not cropped to show the size of the ghosting/flare

Samy - I have one from the 20mm UD. Not sure if it's artistic but here it is.

I shoot flare just about every saturday night with an OCF. 50 1.4G is my favorite so far. 70-200 2.8 VRII is pretty great. 85 1.4G is fine. 24-70 2.8G produces a smaller tiger flare, but it's a great lens if you have a small room to work with and want flare in the corners. Just got the 58 1.4G and got some unique flare at 1.8. https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/103789259521094339660

That's the point- I've never seen much flare from this lens, from the 60 year old version through to my Ais version. All are Sonnar formula.
