Thanks for a modern insight, Ryan.
As you know, delivering bulk ice to the fishing industry is much different than delivering ice to offices or homes that have no ice-making machines.
Long ago when I was a child in Los Angeles, we had home ice delivery. My brother and I would wait for bits to fall on the street as the man sawed chunks off for our house. We'd use the 10-second rule and snap them off the street, brush them off, and suck on them until the ice was gone.
A couple years later we got a refrigerator to replace our icebox.
A generation later, Japan was still dealing with iceboxes.
Because of their lightning recovery from the devastation they experienced during WWII, it's easy to forget that 50 years ago, Japan lagged far behind the US and Europe kin many ways.
The ice delivery thing is but a small example.
