Nice thanks for sharing. I know gear doesn't matter to much but what lens/lenses do you typically use.

Thanks for the kind words, Andy!

Thanks, Kris.

Russ, sweet work, as usual. I like the down court shots on the 70-200 and the tight shots on the hoop.

I have been shooting a 70-200 and 24-70 and largely missing the far end of the court. I've always thought the 300 2.8 would be too big to maneuver and tiring to hand hold for far end and "coming at you" shots, but I may give it a try. These are inspirational although I believe most are the close basket less no. 9 which gives a good sense of place.

Thanks, Dennis. I've renewed your membership in the mutual admiration society.

Mark: Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it.

Matt: Thanks, man. Yeah, #9 is one of those that might have more meaning with more context, which is another way of saying the image doesn't succeed at telling the full story. This was a three-point attempt that would have tided the game with about 10 seconds remaining. It was a pivotal moment in the game, but there's no way to know that simply by looking at the photo.

Thanks, Chris. I appreciate your feedback on the crops.

Thanks again, Andy. The 300 is big and unwieldy in close quarters, no doubt about that. I keep it on a monopod, but I still have to pick it up and place it back down about 100 times per game, so while it's nice to be able to rest it on the pod while shooting, its weight and size are not irrelevant. Having said that, the reach is quite useful, though at high ISO settings (I shoot NBA at ISO 5000) and across that full-court distance, image quality is not consistently wonderful, so I have to take what I can get. That's why, as you note, most of what is posted here is from the near-court rig (that and the fact that the best down-court action usually occurs with players' backs to me, so the shots that work are relatively mundane [see #4] and generally not suitable for the highlight reel ).

A 5D3/300(II) combo is only 0.4-lb more than the 1DX/70-200(II) combo. Intuitively you'd think it would be more, but it isn't. The 300mm is bigger, but not by a lot--I just measured my lenses and the lengths with hoods in place are approx. 12-in for the 70-200mm and 15.25-in for the 300mm.

I'd love to shoot the combo of bodies/lenses discussed above, but with my older bodies (1D4 and 5D2), dark high school gyms and the need to flash, I'm stuck with near-court action. I do use the 300mm for basketball though as I usually move to the stands in the 4th period to get a different perspective.

I'm still working on improving my keeper rate with the 300mm lens, but it is such a fabulous upgrade over the non-IS version I used previously (mainly focus speed for me), I can't help but break it out any chance I get.

Weights from the Canon Camera Museum:
70-200mm f/2.8L IS I = 1590-g (3.51-lb)
70-200mm f/2.8L IS II = 1490-g (3.28-lb)
300mm f/2.8L IS I = (2550-g) 5.62-lb
300mm f/2.8L IS II = (2350-g) 5.18-lb
1DX = 1530-g (3.37-lb)
5D3 = 950-g (2.09-lb)

My 70-200 and 300 are the older and heavier versions but I too would have though there was more of a difference, although 2 lbs isn't nothing between the 70-200 and 300 when on the same body.

1Dx + 70-200 f/2.8L IS II = 6.65 lbs
5DIII + 300 f/2.8L IS I = 7.71

Difference of 1.06 pounds. Add the grip and battery to the 5DIII and that's about another .75 pounds, so let's say 1.3 pounds difference. I agree it's not as much as you'd think, but that 1.3 pounds represents almost 20% of the weight of the 1Dx with lens combination, so that's significant.

Agreed. I didn't think about the grip with extra battery. I've not used one on my 5D2 to help keep the weight down and I often shoot this body in landscape orientation.

Russ: I take it you're pleased with the 5D3 for sports. I am tempted to try to trade my 300/2.8 non-IS for a 5D3 vice upgrading from the 1D IV to the 1Dx.

Patrick: I am pleased with the 5D3 for sports, but not in all circumstances. It works well for downcourt shots in basketball given that the slower frame rate/smaller buffer is not an issue. For football and soccer, I tended more toward the 1DIV as a second body given its superior speed. I'll try the 1Dx and 5DIII combination for gymnastics, but I suspect I'll run into buffer issues with the 5DIII and I will have to weigh that limitation against its ISO and AF advantages. If it's a question of the 5DIII vs the 1Dx, there really isn't any contest as the 1Dx is a beast that stands alone. 5DIII vs 1DIV is a bit of a closer race, though if frame-rate and buffer size are important to you, the 5DIII is limited.

Russ: thanks for the info. Lots of variables to consider plus another as my teenage daughter uses the 5DII for everything from flowers to pictures at the zoo and the 1D series is just too big for her to handle easily. I may just sell the 5DII and a 1DIII that isn't seeing any use and upgrade her to the 5DIII, which I could use as a 2nd body. I usually shoot in 2-3 shot bursts, so I don't think the buffer size would be an issue. I'd love the higher ISO performance of the 1Dx, but can't rationalize the upgrade based on photo sales to date.
