p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Zeiss ZF/ZF.2 Lenses

A few years ago when Zeiss started to expand the ZF line offering, I started to use the Zeiss 2/100mm MakroPlanar, which, imho is a great lens. "Better" than many of my Nikkor lenses. Despite this very positive experience, I never expanded my Zeiss lens set over the years. Don't ask me why, most likely I was happy with the existing lenses in my bag.

After getting the Df, I started looking deeper into Zeiss lenses again and viewing the images available on the web, the "urge" popped up again

This thread is open to anybody willing to share his Zeiss images and experiences with the ZF and ZF.2 lenses. Good, bad and surprises likewise.

To start off, I am sharing here 2 images which surprised me yesterday night. I took an image wide open (f2) with two lenses 2/100mm MP and the 2/135mm APO Sonnar. The 100mm was and is a great lens, but night photography wide open doesn't seem to be its area of strength. The 100mm produced quite a lot of CA which is more less absent in the APO image. The APO looks like to be the winner here. All images unprocessed, only converted from RAW to JPEG with CNX2.

Stopping down the 100mm lens removes the CA seen at wide open aperture
D800E, 2/100mm, f8, ISO 100, Full D800E resolution

Given the D800E's high resolution sensor, the two lenses are resolving quite well at open aperture, imho.

Andy

Another lens seem to be good at night photography. The Zeiss 2/25mm.

A few days ago I tried my MF luck with moving targets. While walking with the dog, a small model helicopter flew around. I asked the owner, if I can train some "target shooting" while he flew his loopings.

The helicoper was about 6 inch long

The keeper rate wasn't particular high. Out of 30 shots, only 12 were in focus. Think, I need more MF practise - AF lenses got me lazy

To increase DOF, I changed aperture to f2.8 for the loopings

Another observation. Focussing the wide angle lenses is simpler.

Oh man! I just gave up getting a 100MP at a great price because I wanted to save up for the 135/2 APO - now this confirms even more that I want this lens for portraits and landscapes.

Thanks Andy!

This is the 35/2. I sold the 25/2 to get this lens. I think the 25/2 was a more pleasing lens, optically, but I prefer the 35 FOV. Although I sometimes miss the 25.

I am truly impressed by the performance of this lens at open aperture. The lens seems to be designed for the upcoming 56 MP sensor

cheers,
Andy

If given druthers, get a Leica R 100 Makro APO over the 100 MP. The spherochromatism will drive you nuts.

I like the pictures of the 135/2 very much, but as I have the 100/2 I decided (up to now) not to buy the 135/2. If I knew for sure that Zeiss was coming with a real 1:1 APO Macro in the 180-200 range, than it was not a difficult decision. Then I would sell my 100/2 and buy the 135/2. Of course I could anticipate on this.

I rented a 100MP once and I found it outstanding and the CA did not bother me. Now, the CA on my 135/2 AIS Nikkor bothers me . . . . The 135/2 Zeiss seems like a lens worth saving for.
I use my 135/2 for portraits and landscapes and a bit of macro at times (with tubes). It's heavy and big, but it's worth it many times to lug along. I've been slowly converting my FX kit to all primes and the 135/2 Zeiss will be an excellent addition.

I've owned a CV 125 for about 4 years and have really grown to appreciate the versatility of the 125/135 FL. Very under-appreciated these days. Don't understand why.

I think because of the very very good 70-200/2.8 and f/4 zooms. But sometimes you just need great wide open f/2 performance in not such a large package.

True enough. But among primes still made and within the range of popular zooms, 135 is a FL fallen out of fashion. 180 is another, but Sigma has a new rocking APO there.
