When it comes to birding small, yet somewhat approachable birds there is in my humble opinion no greater lens than my new to me Canon 600 f/5.6 IS II.....

Yes this is the amazingly sharp, fast AF (at least on 1DX...YMMV with other bodies) and relatively lightweight Canon 300 f/2.8 IS II and the Canon 2.0TCIII.

Here this lens has turned the relatively boring Dark Eyed Junco and made some fine images (of course IMHO...YMMV

)

I love the 300 + 2x combo on a 1DX as well. Even though I have a 600 as well I find myself using the 300 more and more.

I have the 600II also and unless I'm after migrating skittish ducks, I now will opt to grab the 300/2xTC.
