You have to remember that the older lens were released years ago when the Yen to Dollar exchange rate was more favorable to Japan manufacturers. Now the Yen is so strong, they released the newer lens coupled with the strength of the Yen.
It would be nearly impossible to significantly raise prices with the same lens, however new lens, new price. It really is that simple.
