Never grid, often gel. Usually only for tungsten. For me it's just standard practice at weddings because everything is tungsten and I use my strobes more to fill in and enhance ambient light rather than over power it.

For every wedding reception I use 3 speedlites (two stationary and one that I move around). I almost always use a grid for night shots. Sometimes I'll gel.

I grid when I need to restrict light spill, depending on what I'm trying to accomplish. Gel nearly always at night.

Never Grid, but always Gel for Tungsten

The rare times where I have forgotten or lost my gels have been a disaster - disgusting orange backgrounds

Nowadays I just carry a full CTO gel only and slide it partially off the flash head for 1/2 CTO and 1/4 CTO and 3/4 CTO etc.

I don't currently grid my flashes (Speedlite 600EX-RT) I just zoom them in or out. Is a grid really necessary? Sorry for the ignorant question, I did plan to test it eventually, but it seems to me like zooming my speedlite to 135mm or 200mm would do the trick in 99% of wedding related lighting scenarios.

I occasionally gel for tungsten... however most times I prefer the unmodified, ungelled look of pure (daylight balanced) white light that comes out of the flash. I may be wrong, but it also seems to me like the gels subtract something from the overall color spectrum, and even after adjusting the whitebalance I notice that the skin tones don't look right. Anyone else notice this?

I sometimes gel. I have never used a grid, but very frequently I WISH I had grids. That's why I ordered the magmod system.

Always CTO for weddings. Never grid, but I don't have any grids. Maybe if I had some I'd use them but only for a very small percentage of creative shots/portraits/ring shots.

Gel? All the time... Grid? Not so much. Every once in a while. I'll be doing it a lot more once i get my MagMods...

I highly recommend gelling to match indoor incandescent light that basically every venue has. It's one of the favorite things that I learned in 2013 and is super easy once you learn it. Just slap on gel and adjust in-camera custom white balance to 2900 or 3000. We use full CTS gels instead of CTO. I don't find myself using 1/2 gels that much.

As for gridding unmodified speedlites, I'm in the same boat as Reiner in that I just zoom. Though if you're using a modifier then zoom won't work and you'll need a grid.

I love the light fall-off from a grid and it is one of my favorite modifiers with studio strobes. I used them a lot in my commercial work especailly architectural interiors and environmental portraits, 1-12 heads. I rarely use them in my wedding lighting which is primarily speed lights because I don't do super elaborate multi-light lighting set-ups with weddings.

I do the gel thing once in awhile if the situation really calls for it. Most of the time we are balancing on/off camera lighting ratios to the ambient that I don't like or need to warm my speed lights. Although the Nikon smart filters work easily for this.

Some grids are better than others. I prefer an even, rounded pattern. I have a grid I sometimes put onto my on-camera flash at weddings but the pattern is not that even and is more in a four-sided diamond shape. I saw a grid that looks like it would be more to my liking but it seemed to extend out quite a distance from the flash head for on-camera use.
