What do you all think about the new Tamrom 150-600mm lens coming out for inexpensive wildlife shooting?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1013957-REG/tamron_a011_n_sp_150_600mm_f_5_6_3_di.html

I like to shoot birds as a hobbyist and the 70-200mm + 1.7tc is not cutting it. I can't swing even an old manual focus super tele.

Very interested in everyone's thoughts on this thing.

Thanks

B

It will probably give acceptable results for some in the lower magnifications but as with most bargain supertelephotos the higher magnifications will be poor at best. You would be better served by a 300 AF-S f4 with your TC17 IMHO.

Results are the measuring standard for the quality of the lens.

I would rent one before I bought one.

Quite a few images posted shot with it. Here is a translated review. Unlike what DGC1 offered, it appears to be optimized for the long end.

I hope it works for you but if I see someone here post images like those on the site you mentioned taken at 500 and 600mm, I'll happily eat my hat.

I have 300mm f4 ED version, but the Nikon 1.7 tc doesn't work on it. I know I can buy a kenko on it, but haven't felt like investing more into this lens. I want to use FF cameras for my wildlife shooting, so I need some reach.

I don't know what camera you have or what the Tamron costs, but, I would think that if you already have the 1.7 tc, then selling your older 300 and buying a newer (used) af-s version would not set you back any more than the new Tamron. Then you would have a great combo.

That's a good idea, except the Tamron goes all the way out to 600mm! I would double the focal length without a TC, right? I have a D3s and soon a D800. Thanks. B

I've got the 300 and 1.7TC, it'll be easy to make comparisons.

Someone wondered about cost, this lens is $1069.

+1 -

But please take terrible pictures with the Tamron. I'm out of gear $$ and don't need the GAS.

It's interesting that Tamron appears to be relying on software (SuckyPix) to correct lens aberrations, as opposed to correcting them optically like more expensive lenses do.

I wonder how well the lens will actually perform without resorting to that horrible (IMHO) malware for processing the images?

As always, crap on = crap out. One must PAY for FL, pure and simple.
There is no free 400/500/600mm lunch. Canon's old 400 f5.6L will
probably go down as the last 'discount' meal @400. Just sayin'

What? You mean you lied when you told us the 300+TC's is the cheapest and yet great way for longer FL's!?! Don't say you have been taking all those AMAZING pic's with real supertele's all along!

Except the 300mm can't zoom and for many that is what they need m

I have a D800 and D3s too. I use the 300 f2.8 (I did have the f4 until I finally saved enough for a used 2.8) with the 1.7 on the d800. The ability to crop with that camera is fantastic. It's like shooting with a 500 on the d3s, or better. Would I like to have a 500, sure. But I'm relatively satisfied for now. Maybe someday....
ETA Look at it this way. I can take a horizontal shot, just do a straight crop to vertical, and still have a roughly 15mp shot. Big enough for a really nice print.

What about the 300 f4 on the D800? Did you ever try that?

There never used to be any 35mm f1.4 free lunch either Tamron has some pretty good lenses
and perhaps the competition from Sigma has opened their eyes further. Just hoping! I've got one on order
and if it isn't at least decent, it will go back. I just want to keep an open mind and find out for myself.
I'll post some images after I use it.

I can't remember for sure, but I think maybe so. That would have been two big purchases for me so I doubt I got them real close together. I can't remember which came first though. Sorry.
Anyway, it would still be a good combo for you. Although the new 80-400 would be nice too, just more money. It'd all be easy if it weren't for that nagging issue of money.
