p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tripod head for new Tamron 150-600 ?

I have a tripod, but was wondering what the best setup on a small budget would work for Birds and wildlife, maybe birds in flight.
Keep finding Snowies, but there so far away I need a telescope to see them. Hoping this lens will be a big help.
Maybe a good car window mount moght be good as well. Suggestions ?

At less than 5 pounds, the relatively light weight of this lens gives you some options for support. You can get away with a regular ballhead, but for flight shots and panning, a gimbal or sidekick-style support would probably make life easier and perhaps yield better results. If you can give a price range that is more specific than "small budget", it would enable people to give specific recommendations.

As for support in a vehicle, plenty of cheap and easy options. Some pipe insulation cut and laid over your open door window works, as would a bean bag or even a pillow/rolled up jacket. If you're so inclined, there are ways to mount tripod heads on the door frame as well, but given the limited space, I would try to see if the easier, simpler methods work for you first.

As a side note, if you are so far away as to need a spotting scope, then even with 600mm you'll still need to work on getting closer.

I've seen the Wimberly Gimbal heads and even used they go for almost $500. Small budget at least as far as I'm concerned means probably $300 or under. But at the same time, I don't want to put the lens at risk either.
Do they have a beanbag that can be mounted to the lens itself, or should I say the lens tripod mount?

Wimberley is not the only game in town when it comes to gimbals. Check out Jobu Designs, as an example. More along the lines of your budget. There are foreign-made knockoffs available on the 'bay for less than $100, but it's up to you whether you want to go that route understanding there may be compromises in quality.

If you use a beanbag, there is no need for a mount. It is meant to adjust to the shape of the lens and help cradle it as well as dampen vibration.

The Jobu Jr. 3 would be perfect for the new Tammy 150-600 lens

Dear Bsmooth,

Look at the options here. They pretty much have them all from just over $ 100.00 to the $ 500.00 plus range.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=gimbal+mounts

I'm either going to get an Opteka or a Coral Pix gimbal to handle my Sigma 150-500 once I settle on a tripod.

Since you don't yet have the Tamron 150-600 I'd wait until you get it before I'd buy anything, but I'm cheap so maybe you might go a different route?

Regards,

Tim Murphy

How about the mounting plate? RRS hasn't developed one yet so I ordered a 4" universal plate, hopefully it fits ok.

You don't need any special plate designed for that or any other lens. The larger (longer) lens you have, the longer lens-plate you normally need. About any lens-plate made for lenses in the range 400-600 will be ok for this lens. A 4" sized lens-plate will probably work ok. But normally you buy one that is a bit longer for a 600mm lens

+1

You really do not need a special plate. Measure the lens foot and get any number of universal plate w/ anti-rotation ridge that fits from makers such as RRS, ProMediaGear,
Hejnar, Sunwayfoto (will not fit an RRS *LEVER* clamp), Markins, Wimberley for around or less than $50 (all the above are for Arca dovetail clamps).

+1 for the Jobu Jr 3. I use it with my Canon 400 5.6 with & without a 1.4X TC on my 1D Mk4 and it is perfect for this setup.

PS. I just use a universal Wimberly 3.5" lens plate on my 400 and it works fine.

I wish I knew or could measure the foot of the lens, hence the question on what others are doing. I went with a 4" universal and a 6" universal based on Lars' recommendation on matching 600mm lens specs. The spare plate will come in handy for other projects I'm sure.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Roger

^^^^
You don't need to measure the foot of the lens. The lens-plate is normally much longer than the foot of the lens. A longer lens-late makes it more easy to get perfect balance on your setup. So it also depens on what camera you will use. You slide the lens-plate back and forth in the clamp of the ballhead/gimbal head to get perfect balance. And make it feel like it's weightless. Here is a photo of my 500 lens just so you can see the lens foot and lens plate

Looks almost exactly like the same set-up I have Lars, only I have the RRS replacement foot on the lens. And yes when balanced the lens feels weightless.

The extra length of the lens plate will be handy for attaching a flash bracket.

Thanks for the info sir.

Might check out the Acratech heads. They have a built in gimbal feature. I've used it for years with the 100-400. I spoke with them and am planning on going that route, since I have the ballhead and the new lens isn't going to be that heavy.

I use the Manfrotto 393 and believe it would be a perfect option for the 150-600. I picked on up used on FM for around $100.

BEST SETUP.......Handheld.....otherwise I would go with a Jobu Jr 3 gimbal and Feisol 4 section CF with twist lock tripod if you really need to. Other option would be Feisol monopod and the Jobu or monopod head or no head at all.

You certainly don't need a gimbal for the Tamron, any more than you need one for a 400 f5.6, or for a 100-400.

A regular ball head works just fine for the Tamron 150-600. I know because I owned one.

The Tamron 150-600 only weighs 4.3 pounds.
