p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Christmas in the Gorge

Hello all,

This is the final set from the Gorge freeze in the beginning of December. For a long time now I've wanted to shoot the Gorge with the waterfalls covered in ice and it finally became a possibility with the weather but an even greater factor being my oddball work schedule usually getting in the way. I literally ran out of daylight both days including the frigid weather killing off my batts the first day (3rd party batts now out of rotation.

I went to my favorite spots to see what it looked like. It was busy both days but with some deft tripod placement or long SS I could make it look like I was the only observer.

#1: Horsetail Falls

This was my first stop and I wondered why everyone stood at the bridge to compose the shot. Even though the waterfall was almost completely iced over, the spray and wind was significant. However, if you moved about 10 feet to the left (and off the road) you still had this nice view.

#2: Sheppard's Dell Falls

I've only been able to get an awesome shot from here once years ago when the Digital Rebel was the only Canon DSLR available. That was in the Spring and I still hunt for the perfect shot.

#3: Oneonta Gorge

An interesting aside was a stop to see what this was like. The water was high and frigid and that logjam made me shoot it and go on.

#4: Multnomah Falls

For many this is the tourist spot to be if there is just one waterfall to stop and shoot. For that reason I usually pass it by - way too many people to navigate. But this time was different, the conditions were so unusual that I wanted to witness it myself and not on KGW news. I opted for the traditional looking portrait of the waterfall allowing for the ice cold water veins from the flow.

#5: Multnomah Falls Lodge

For almost as long as I've been shooting the Gorge I've wanted a shot like this - a Christmas scene. It's probably as close as we'll get this year and good enough for me. There was a small snow squall earlier in the day, and the people passing through were nulled out by using the longest shutter speed that was reasonable (30 seconds). Christmas lights and a frozen waterfall behind say "Merry Christmas" to me.

And I hope to you, too. Merry Christmas FM'ers

Nice group of pictures. Last picture of waterfall behind building is a holiday postcard.
