The soft case Canon provides does nothing for shock protection. What is your recommendation for a protective lens bag for this piece of glass?

Padded lowepro case? I haven't found that it requires any more protection than any other lens in my bag.

A good neck strap, that lens works best when attached to a camera, although I have occasionally used it as a crystal ball

The Lowepro Lens Exchange 200 AW works well when traveling with a second lens.

It can take a lot of beating. I wouldnt worry. Ive travelled all over with it in a normal backpack, attached to the camera body.

...just reverse the hood and put both caps on, pretty well protected just like that. Since the front and rear elements are so vulnerable, they and their coatings can be damaged just from rubbing on anything, even the softest fabric, so the caps are your only real and best protection.

Never needed one. Just put it back to your camera bag, which should be padded well, right after each shooting.

I put mine in a 11x11 Lowepro lens case with the hood reversed. I don't even unpack the Canon lens pouch and leave it in the original box.

I have the Optech Snoot Boot lens protection bags for most of my small to medium lenses, and really like them for being thin but at the same time providing good cushioning. They are lots less bulk than most lens cases, which allows me to have them on when I am in transit, but then have the lens in the same spot in the bag with the Snoot Boot off when I am working with the lenses. They are also great if you want to put lenses in a backpack or other bag that does not have dividers or spots for lenses. I also use them to put one lens on top of the other in a camera bag that has enough depth for that. And they are really not all that expensive either

Use the FM search of B&H that shows above to look for "Optech Snoot Boot" to see the full range of sizes available. The specifications tab at B&H gives the dimensions of the one you are looking at.

I use the lenscoat pouches. Not a lot of protection but it keeps it from bouncing around against other things inside a thinktank or other backpack or fanny pack which provide protection from exterior impact.
