Most if not all of the sample pictures are of non-moving birds. I just hope that this lens has fast focus for BIF. The IQ is quite OK to me...they are just as good as my 400mm f/5.6L and at 600mm at that.

I'm waiting with bated breath for real world reviews on FM before pulling the trigger. TIA for those who pre-ordered .

Holy Mackeral, even if this lens turns out to be just decent it's a steal at that price, they are giving it away. This latest wave of competition Canon is facing is great news. Bodies/sensors/lenses - the Canon gouging has seen it's day

Pre-ordered today, I just hope the IQ is real close to my 100-400.

I doubt that it will be great for BIF, but for the price who cares if it is great for BNIF.

it's not obvious that Canon will lower prices in response to this lens. Those who really need the highest quality and are willing to pay for that quality will be the only consumers left to buy Canon. Since the price-sensitive ones will have switched to Tamron, Canon can raise the price even higher because those who are left really need Canon quality.

I don't really understand why this lens is superior to the EF 100-400L IS. I have a very good UW 2008 copy (I hesitate to say exceptional, because I've used very few super-teles), and it seems extremely sharp even with the Canon 1.4X II. I bought mine used on FM for $1000 (without lens hood -- about $10 aftermarket from China).

AF is fast, IS is old design and could use improvement, but not at that price! I actually prefer the push/pull for this type of lens, but that isn't a deal breaker either way.

I am curious if someone can do a real-life comparison of this new Tamron (and the Sigma would be nice to see too!) against a good copy of the Canon. Looking forward to some comparisons!

I'm sure there will be some useful comparisons made very soon after release, Jim, but I don't think anyone has written the 100-400 off just yet. The Tamron, IMO, is more appealing because it has a longer native FL range and lets you reach out to 600mm without a TC. Adding a 1.4 to the 100-400 puts you at f/8 and out of AF capability on most Canon bodies. Asides from IQ tests, it will be interesting to see how well servo AF and VC work. For $1,069, I'll keep my expectations realistic and hope to be pleasantly surprised .

I'm a little gun-shy from the ancient past, while zooms gaining prominence and professional acceptance, and aftermarket was usually inferior by a large margin. Recent lens developments seem to refute that model, so let's hope it holds true here as well. If these lenses are sharp and durable, it's a big win for consumers, meaning all of us.

One hopes they will be innovations, not compromises.

Tamron's innovation appears to be using third-party software (SuckyPix) to correct lens aberrations during post-processing. I wonder if JPEG shooters will be seeing similar results, or will users have to shoot RAW to have acceptable image quality?

Adobe's latest versions have also added the lens profile for the Tamron 150-600mm.

From what I have read , it looks like it will work for me . It is a hobby and about 50 % of time when someone asks , I see nothing wrong with the shots .
I don't pixel peek unless I am cropping and don't print over 8.5 X 14 , in fact I don't have any 8.5 X 14 paper left - was hoping for Black friday , cyber monday or Xmas sales - so it is 8,5 X 11 till needed . [epson 837 printer ]
I will still wait for others to post shots - more into bugs , flowers , sitting birds etc .
It will be around tax time when local shop offers no tax sale .
My concerns right now is they give you software - will it work on a MAC or P S ?

Yes, they are from several of the Japanese sites linked to prior in the this thread. These are actual lens owner images shot within the past week, and not images provided by Tamron.

this lens will produce images with are decent at 600. more detail than cropping a 100-400, or sigma 150-500, or 50-500. it will have decent central sharpness on a full frame camera canon camera, not as much on a high MP crop like 7D or 70D. It will have slow focus, some focus issues and inconsistencies.
It will be far and away the most economical option with best value if you want to get to 600. Dont expect miracles. there wont be any. it is also impossible to judge the quality of images without looking at 100% crops. my sigma 120-400 produced excellent websized images.

Imagemaster is the cranky old man that lives down the street and yells at all the kids that may hit a ball into his yard. Just laugh it off.
