p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 600mm on beer budget. Advice on TC needed.

I have a D7100 + 300f4 + Kenko Pro 300 1.4tc + Nikon 1.7tc. Time to start search for a deal on a 2.0tc. I’m happy with the Kenko 1.4. Maybe I just don’t know any better.

Choices:
Kenko Pro 300 2.0tc: Inexpensive, Af with AFD lens (if I happen to pick up AFD 2.8 tele)
Nikon TC 2.0E /EII: Same price used as Kenko new.
Nikon TC 2.0E III : Expensive

Question:
For occasional use with 300f4 (ie.. an Eagles nest). Is the TC 2.0E III worth the extra $$? Is the TC 2.0E/E II better than the Kenko?

Thanks,Mitch

Ask Will - aka Trenchmonkey.

Are you going to sell the other TCs or keep them ? I have only gone with the 1.7 as the 2.0II was not good enough IQ wise or so I heard. The 2.0III is supposed to be much better.

Is the extra 0.3 (2-1.7) worth that much ?

Andy

I'm going to keep them all to use as needed. The TC2. is in addition to the others.

Mitch,
I use teleconverters with my D300/D300s and started with the 300f4 + Kenko Pro 300 1.4x. Then I got a Nikon TC17E II and found the image quality far superior to the Kenko 1.4. So I figured that the Nikon TC14E II would be worth getting also and found it to be much better than the Kenko also. Faster focusing and better image quality meant that I was getting more keepers.

I have since got a 300f2.8 VRI and also the newer TC 20EIII which I find excellent, but it needs good light to make it sing properly.

I now find that the TC 17E II gives the weakest quality performance (but still can produce good images) of the 3 teleconverters and never use it anymore. I either crop shots from the TC 14E II or zoom with my feet when using the TC 20E III.

My reccomendation to you would be to sell your Kenco 1.4x and your Nikon 1.7x and get yourself a Nikon 14E II and a Nikon 20E III.

There are rumors that the TC 14E II is to be upgraded to version III, only Nikon knows if that is true and when.

Good luck

My ears were burnin' (thx Andy)
Only thing I have handy is a D700 grab with the TC-20E III/300 f4 combo.
It's the best of the 2X TC's on this Nikkor prime and I've tried them all.
As usual...handheld & SOOC

FWIW I use ALL the Nikon TC's and my TC-17E II is by far my favorite. Just sayin'

You're in luck because the D7100 loves TC's. My TC20EIII was unusable on my D300, decent on my D700, and stellar on my D7100.

Correct me if I'm wrong but 300mm + 1.7tc is 500mm...plus the 1.5 dx crop plus the 1.3 crop from the d7100 = almost 1000mm fov? How much more are you looking for?

Thanks Andy. I knew when I posted this that Will wouldn’t be able to resist playing. I think the extra 0.3 is worth it if I can get a deal. I’m willing to wait.

Thanks Ozian. I need to keep the Kenco for occasional use with my old 80-400 AFD. I just got the 1.7 and think I’m going to love it, time will tell. Unfortunately I believe you’re right about going with Nikon for the 1.4 & 2.0

Thanks Will. I think the TC-17E II is going to be my favorite also. Back to monitoring B&S for the other two. As usual great examples, first time I’ve seen the TC-20E III.Don’t think I have seen the Eagle either. All three are Amazing!

Thanks Jason, Good to here, that’s why I got the D7100. Great Eagle shot! The few I have are boring.

Thanks for pointing that out. I am looking for as much as I can get for what I can afford.

The best "600mm" onna brewski budget has gotta be the AF-S 300 f4 and D2X shot in HSC mode.
(obviously the D7100 can be substituted if you already have one at your disposal) No TC's to slow
ones AF/rob ya of light AND you get a nice fps bump from 5 to 8 (6-7 w/D7100)

This HSC (high speed crop thing) has been severely under-rated and labelled a "gimmick" over the years.
D7100 guys are bringin' it back in spades. IQ is in direct proportion to the quality of glass used. I'll offer
this sample with the TC-17E II onna Chub. D2Xs @7MP SOOC. Imagine what the D7100 would look like

It's a 1.33x in camera zoom that basically doubles your FL on a crop body. The D2X(s) has it
as well as the D7100 (think it's called 1.3) but it's really 1.33 if one does "the math".

For example: 200mm becomes 400mm
200 X 1.5 (DX) = 300
in HSC that 300 X 1.33 = 400

Check my Exif on the pic above...it'll show the 680mm 35mm equiv.

Why not just crop in post and not risk cutting off a wing tip or some other bird part? I never get the point of the Nikon's built in crop mode.

Guess you could (Canon dude) but if you're good ya don't clip squat.
Nice gettin' home and seein' a 25" BIF on your monitor. We also have
a 5:4 mode to crop in camera on our Pro bodies...think 8 X 10 prints.
Guess I shouldn't be using THAT either Time is money.

Plus as Will said, shooting in HSC (D2x) or 1.3 Crop (D7100) mode also brings the following benefits:

1. Smaller files on the cards - easier to process and more shots per card
2. Increase in FPS on both cameras
3. On the D7100 especially, extends the buffer depth by about 30-40% (depending on the the Raw compression and bit depth selected).
4. On the D7100 and D2Xs (not sure about the D2x), the crop modes change the metering to only meter form the cropped area and excluding areas outside, which might lead to a more consistent exposure.

Some people still prefer to crop and that's fine, absolutely nothing wrong with that, but for the above reasons HSC or 1.3 crop mode might bring some benefits ?

Thank you kindly, Andrew. Very well played...and your 1st "like"
I often sell prints right off the LCD or my laptop/iPad (events and in the field w/clients)
Pulling up this HSC grab the other morning resulted in a 16 X 20 canvas order on the spot.
(oops! there's that worthless TC-17E II again)
