back on topic :-)
The d7000 will be a measurable upgrade to the d90..
I have had all of these and owned and shot a d7000 for two years.. and now have a d7100 along with a d600...
If i were you.. i would grab a d7000 and enjoy the heck out of it.. and spend that extra $$ on some glass. It is a fantastic sensor.

I sold off my d7000 a little while back.. and i am actually thinking of picking one back up.. I really like the 16mp resolution and size for traveling.

There's a lot of folks whom believe the 16 MP Sony sensor might just represent the sweet spot for DX machines. Having owned both I'm not sure I can argue against their position.

As someone who has owned cameras with the 16MP Sony APS-C, 24MP Sony APS-C, 16MP Sony m43 and 24MP Toshiba/Nikon sensors, I do think that the 16MP APS-C sensor is the best all-round performer of the lot. Both 24MP sensors are pure monsters at low ISO's though, but each has its own set of issues (the Toshiba has banding in the deep shadows, the Sony gets noise in the mid shadows that can be quite visible in skies).

I'm primarily a low-ISO shooter, so I do prefer the 24MP sensors, but for a do-everything camera it really is hard to beat the 16MP D7000 despite the lower pixel count and weaker AF unit.

This may well be one of the biggest myths of the last 2 yrs in Nikonland
There isn't a shot I can't get with the MultiCAM4800 AF...low light/sports/BIF etc.
Proper settings and decent glass there's really nothing 'weak' about it. Many never
took the time to learn it. Those of us that did, are still happily shooting with 'em.
Then, I'm still nailing the AF with the outdated CAM2000 (D2Xs) Just sayin'

FWIW the MultiCAM3500 does a quicker job of it when TC's are employed,
but for naked glass the MultiCAM4800 is no slouch whatsoever. Bank on it.

It's no myth. The Multi-CAM3500 is simply a much better sensor. It's far more low-light capable, has better frame coverage and is more sensitive. A skilled shooter can get around most of Multi-CAM4800's limitations, but that doesn't change the fact that you'll get more AF hits quicker, especially in low-light, with Multi-CAM3500.

It's the difference between works pretty well and world-class. Multi-CAM3500 is the best AF sensor on the market today. Multi-CAM4800 is the best consumer AF sensor on the market.

This. The D7100 can focus on things I can't even see in the viewfinder. The D7000 gave up on things that were still viewable. And yes, its larger coverage is due to the fact that it's an FX AF sensor. Just like the D600/610 is using a DX sensor, so its AF points are in an unusually small cluster compared to the other FX cameras.

The only quibble is that the Multi-CAM3500 is not an FX-specific sensor, it was introduced at the same time for FX and DX.

While Multi-CAM4800 was first introduced for DX, it in fact has better frame coverage than the only comparable FX sensor (the old 5-point unit from the F80, which would live on in varying forms right up to the D90's unit).

My simple advice, at this point in time I'd get a D7100. Now that the price difference is only $300 or so it makes the most sense. If that 300 is a lot right now, like the difference between getting a lens then obviously get the D7000.

I'm very happy with the D7000. I had a D5100 before so I knew what the output was all about. It's a good camera!

I have and use both. If I could only have one camera it would be the 7100. That being said the 7000 is a great camera, and I agree with TM on this one. Learn the focusing system and it works extremely well. I don't do a lot of indoor shooting but for wildlife and landscapes Dawn to dusk, the 7000 works well for me.
