p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · First Senior shoot, C&C welcome

Did my first Senior session last weekend. Alyssa and her family had lived in Florida for the past 8-10 years prior to moving to Italy. Naturally, she wanted her pictures done in the snow. We got a late start and did a lot of driving to look for locations with snow. This was a favor for a friend, her Dad, and a late request so the planning was 'off the cuff.'

Looking for some feedback here as she is looking to submit these to her school tomorrow. I came home with 300+ shots and narrowed them down to 65, 15 of which I showed her family (unedited) so they could choose four poses. Below are the first two followed by another two I processed before their selection.

Thanks for looking!

Kevin

1. I don't think has good tones for B&W, her face is just too pale IMO.
2. Consider a tighter crop, maybe down the middle of the tree
3. Yes!!! Looks oversaturated on my uncalibrated monitor, but otherwise you nailed it!
4. Flat lighting, wide angle, to me this looks like a different (less attractive) person entirely.

FWIW

1. Agreed.
2. I tried a tighter crop and just don't like it, but thanks!
3. De-saturated a tad and you're right...it does look more appealing. I didn't bump up saturation on the original though.
4. I have to agree with you.

Thanks!

Kevin

1_rev. Second attempt at B&W, but not sure if the skin tones look any better. Not sure how to get what I'm looking for. I typically like the white, porcelain look with B&W.

1C. In color. De-saturated the sweater a tad.

On the color version see if desaturating the space in between the trees helps her face separate a bit more. FWIW

And 5 is waaaaay better than 4 IMO

Kevin,

I think you changed the images around a bit. Bryan is talking about No. 1 as a b&w image, but for me, No. 1 is blank. He comments on four images, I only see three. but five are numbered.

No 2 is rock-solid. They've gotta love it.

No. 4, the speedlight is too hot. It should be pretty even with the ambient light, or one step hotter -- depending on what kind of look you're going for. In a shot like that, I would think you would want it no more than one step hotter. Her forehead looks pretty blown out to me.

No. 5 is a really nice shot. The blue sweater goes well with her blue eyes. The lighting and the angle you're shooting is very flattering.

I want to see more of this senior. I know you're probably not within walking distance of the Coliseum or any leaning towers, but is there any way you can get a shot that clearly shows she's in Italy?

Nice shots! You're off to a great start, much much much better than my first senior shoot.

Now I see two more, 1_rev and 1C. I love this shot, and right now I really like it in color.

Are you using LR? If so, in the B&W, take the red scale and go way up with it, and then look at it going way down. You can lighten and darken that sweater however you please, and I bet it would look killer either really light (going with her face and hair) or really dark (in contrast to her face and hair). It might look best in B&W as is, I just always like to experiment like that.

And now there's No. 6. Is that a spot color or is it that drab there? Lights are a stop or two hot for me, but this might be workable (for me) if you go all contrasty here. It might already be working for you as is.

Thanks for the feedback, Ron! Not sure what happened, but there should be six main images in the original post now. I just couldn't wait to post those first few!

I think we're all agreeing No. 4 is the weak link in what I've posted thus far. Not to worry, there are plenty more, but these are her picks...for now. She's only seen 15 of the 65 I scrubbed from the shoot.

We talked about taking a trip to Venice in the Spring for a second shoot. I've known her Dad for about 12 years.

Yes, de-saturating did help. I used that technique as well in No. 6, but to try and convey the cold.

I agree, I like No. 5 much better than No. 4 as well.

she just doesn't seem 'comfortable' to me. i'd like to see a little more of the environment in the shots, and some more natural emotion from her. technically they're good though.
