there are a few devices that make it less of a heartache.

the question is, is it worth connecting up to one?

i have used it with my Surface Pro 2. it functions as required but in the end i prefer being hardwired.

it's just another battery to charge.

i use camranger/ipad with my 1dx when shooting architecture/interiors. have had it for about seven months and so far it has performed flawlessly. had previously used an eye-fi card, but the wifi connection was so unpredictable.

+1 on the Camranger. Have both the Eyefi and Transcend wifi cards and they love to drop out. The Camranger has been flawless so far.

What functionality are you trying to reproduce with the iPad? Do you want full control of the camera bracketing and exposure? Or would image review & shutter control suffice? Do you want Live View, and would modest resolution for composition be sufficient, or would you want a higher resolution LV for manual focus assist?

At least for the last question, as far as I know, wireless controls (built-in or after market) use the camera USB output, which is relatively modest in resolution. For a more detailed Live View output one would need to utilize the HDMI camera output. The high resolution of the iPad screen cannot improve the limited resolution of the USB output.

I would think that most brands of camera with built-in wireless would have this capability, as well as the capability to transfer shots to a remote device. I know that for Canon bodies with wireless, one has to use Canon software (free app) but that this functionality is not an issue for smart phones, pads, etc.
