p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon FD 100mm f/2 optics = EF 100mm f/2 optics?

I've been wondering about this:
Is there a relationship between the Canon FD 100mm f/2 and the EF 100mm f/2? I've read that the FD 100mm f/2 is legendary but can't find anything describing the relationship between the FD 100mm f/2 optics and EF 100mm f/2 optics.
Any input would be appreciated.

I always liked the EF version, and have been wondering this myself. The FD one is equally hard to find, and similarly-priced to the FD.

There's nothing about performance but in the Canon museum you can see that the EF added an additional elements and groups and it says group 5 moves (ie IF I assume). I use an R mount on the Nex which has the same element/group setup as the FD

That sounds very likely

haha good catch!

I meant EF, but you know that.
Yes, the EF 100/2 is totally IF.

Some similarity in the block diagrams, but definitely not identical:

It's not that hard to find. KEH and B&H have copies available. They are only about a hundred bucks less than you'd pay for the EF right now (including rebates).

The FD 135/2 goes for around the same price and is, in my opinion, the better lens, but some might balk at the increased weight and size.

Thought I read somewhere once that the EF 100/2 is similar to the EF 135/2 and EF 200/2.8 in design approach.

The 100/2 doesn't have UD glass, unlike the 135L and 200/2.8L, so I think its performance is more like the 85/1.8. I've read comments from people saying that it's very similar to the 85/1.8 but with a bit less purple fringing (which is really bad on the 85/1.8).

That's interesting as these are 3 of my favorite lenses. As great of a (well deserved) reputation the 135mm f2 has, I find the 100mm f2 and 200mm 2.8 to be underrated gems.

I've found a lot of the FD glass outperforms the EF counterparts. Not sure if the 100/2 is the same. The FD 85/1.8 is similarly performing to my old EF 100/2, though the FD 50/1.4 is better than the EF version and the FD 35/2 is WAY better than the original EF version (not sure how it compares to the new IS version, though.) Some optical design changes had to be made to make AF feasible. The FD 135/2 is awesome, though it can fringe in the right circumstances. Works great on a Speed Booster and was outstanding on the A7.

They are usually somewhat hard to find, at least for a reasonable price. Right now, KEH and B&H just happen to have them, and the BGN one at KEH is something I've been eyeing.

I do think that the price is a little high (compared to other FD glass), but realistically, it is quite reasonable.

I think we'll see FD glass prices skyrocket like M and F has the past few years.
