Congratulations to Tim Kuhn for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 12 votes - View Previous Winners

Come one come all, round 2 is open for THREE, more of your best or favorite images from this year. This has been a superb post so far, lets keep it going!!!

Here it is folks, your chance to post your favorite and or best N&W pictures from 2013!!! I have discussed with some others and this year we decided to go with three images each. Please keep it to 3 for the first go around. We all have many images and it is hard to choose, once the post has been up a while we can go for a second round of 3 more.

Here are links to the past 4 years;

If you can add a bit of an explanation and or why your images are special, all the better

Let's have it and let's have fun!!!!

I wish you all the best in the coming year.

Tim

1 Is from my trip with Eric G to Botswana. I owe Eric a world of thanks for his encouragement and his sharing of expertise for that trip.
I was hoping to have the chance just to see Painted Dogs, they are endangered and not known to be cooperative. To get a shot like this made my year
2 Before our trip I hadn't really cared all that much for photographing Zebra, I sure do now! These animals are sublimely beautiful, if not a bit testy
3 This is a shot I have been trying to get for many years. It was taken on the Oregon coast in Spring, a time of morning clouds and dull light. Finally I got them in some sweet light.

Wonderful images Tim.

Here are my favorites of 2013.

1) Wood Duck at Tingley Beach in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This was an image that I was able to recover from CF card error using some rescue software.

Canon 5D III with Canon 500 f4 II w/ Canon 1.4x III

2) The Trumpeter Swans winter at a location only a few minutes from my home in Minnesota. It is the city of St. Paul's drinking water. An area stays open there and for the last few winters the Swans have stuck around.

3) Had a lot of fun up north with the Loons. This was my favorite of the bunch, although I blew out the whites a little on this one.

I can't wait to see what everyone has to offer here. I've learned a lot the past year and would like to thank everyone for their input.

Before this thread gets going to far...would it be best if we just used the Like button to comment on the postings or is it okay to add comments for each set of 3 images. I just find that these threads get less cluttered with tonnes of comments and not enough images....what does everyone think??

I've spoken to Tim in PM and I after hearing his reasoning I think it should be fine to just let the thread flow as it will. Leave comments, leave likes and just have a good time

But you can leave your own opinion on this if you want, or speak with your keyboard and either leave Likes, comments or both

Now I'm off to pick my own images.....this is really hard....I can't pick only 3.......arrggghhhhh

Great thread

Because 2013 was my first full year of wildlife photography(started in late 2012 with a sigma 150-500) it was kind of hard to pick my favorites. I feel I have a lot of photos I like, but nothing really over the top, anyways here are 3 I like.

Okay here goes....this was really impossible to pick.....

1)This was a special shot as I had just found out about the amazing eagle nest that you can view from about 3meters above the nest on a hiking trail overlooking the Yukon River. This was one of the nest's parents that gave me a great look back and I loved the background. I have printed this one on metal and it just pops like crazy.

2)Haines....hey did I tell you guys I went to Haines this November....maybe I should post some images from there some time..... This is one of my favourites from Haines, just couldn't beat the light on this cold morning that soon deteriorated into a super cold and windy day that forced me to drive home to Whitehorse early. I have this one printed on metal and it is also gorgeous in print.

3)My best ever magpie shot. I just loved the background and the crazy iridescence I captured on the tail. I also have printed this one on metal and it is very nice.

Thanks Tim. Already some excellent images posted here. This past year I photographed in 55 C (130 F) weather and Minus 40 (same in C & F) I photographed 50 metres (55 yards) from my front door and 10,000 miles (16,000 km) away. Thanks to all who viewed my images and those that commented. All the best for the holidays and the new year.

Tim,
I'm glad you took the wheel this year it slipped my mind until you PMed me

I didn't do much in the way of traveling this year but I did manage to get a few favorites for the year

#1. I really love this shot because it's almost FF and the
mid-flight fish toss and few water drops added that extra bit neatness.

#2 This one was a wait and hope shot, in the spring the Snowy Egrets would group up (8 to 12)
at low tide. There always seemed to be a grouchy one, when there were 2 grouchy ones the fireworks
started, and this fight was at least 30 feet in the air.

#3 A Brown Pelican with it's catch, the light and action made this a favorite of mine.

Here are a few of my personal favourites for 2013. All were firsts for me.

1. This image resulted from my first ever opportunity to photograph a pileated woodpecker. The bird landed on the tree trunk .5 meters off the ground, right where there was some good light from the setting sun. I had to lie down in the snow to get the shot.

2. I had never seen a bear in a tree prior to this youngster going up this tree, but only a couple metres up so I had a good eye level opportunity.

3. Lots of firsts from my first trip to Hawaii, but this little gold dust gecko was also a first sighting. It still makes me smile after many months. May not be the best shot, but sometimes slightly flawed images are still very enjoyable (rationalization at work here!).

Enjoying these posts immensely. Thanks to everyone for sharing.

Wow, Don you sure made the most out of 2013...Churchill, Africa, India....awesome selection of images. That fox shot is sooooo cool and as I think you said the first time it has been documented. However, your take-down shot is just unbelievable but I believe

Fantastic shots from everyone. Always such a joy to see your passions and tour the world. Tim, thank you for starting this and sharing the links from past years.

I have a few shots that represent my continuing photographic journey this year. I do hope you enjoy them .

1. The Hummingbird- Plant it and they will come Many new plants that hummers like were added to the garden this year in hopes of luring them in for some viewing and photo opportunities.

2. Butterfies - My first attempt at planting a flowering vine that is the host plant for the Gulf Fritillary . This shot was the first time I ever saw them laying eggs. I was so very pleasantly surprised how they would lay them on the vine tendrils.

3. The beach - Went back to Dauphin Island and still love the beach, the magic of the surf, light and shore birds . For a girl that is not crazy about the water, I sure love the beach

So, there you have it, my year with the hummingbirds, butterflies and shorebirds. I have been blessed with a good year.

I thank you all for your help, patience and continued support , it means so very much.
I wish you all a wonderful year for 2014, one you can look back on with many fond memories.

Hi All...

My first time posting in the "Best of..." thread. I retired late last year and have had some time to devote to my hobby in 2013. Plus, I was able to add a 100-400 zoom to my kit which I'll be using more and more.

1. Hedgehog Cactus - In my back yard.

2. An egret I shot using the 100-400 at Moss Landing, California earlier this year.

3. A heron shaking its head at Oak Creek in Sedona, Arizona.

Some really fantastic photos in this thread...they give me much to aspire to.

Tom
