p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Kat .. another skin edit

For the past two weeks, I have been playing with the Frequency Separation method of skin editing. I posted a picture of Nadya demonstrating this (see https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1259466). This proved surprisingly successful .. I have never done this before. The beauty of this is that detail editing is entirely independent of tonal/colour editing - and detail can be fully retained no matter what you do to colour and tone.

This week, I purchased a new set of Alien Bee lights and invited Kat over for a test. She came with no makeup since this was just a one hour equipment test. With her skin texture, I normally shoot her with flat lighting - harsh lighting is bad for her in general. I took a about 300 shots of her trying the over heat the Alien Bee lights but they performed superbly. Since I had a hair light on her head, I took a few shots of her with the light shining from behind but did not move the main light causing her to be in relatively strong light.. She pulled a few faces which I thought were delightful - however the shadow effect was simply atrocious.

In spite of the terrible shadow effects on her face, I decided to try the frequency separation editing technique to see if I could recover the image. Here is the results: Comments and suggestions regarding the use of this technique would be appreciated.....

1. Kat using quite flat lighting suitable for her face - unedited out of camera http://pix.tphoto.ca/random/kat99.jpg

2. Funny face shot with bad lighting for her face - unedited out of camera http://pix.tphoto.ca/random/kat101.jpg

3. After editing with Frequency Separation http://pix.tphoto.ca/random/kat100.jpg

4. The effect is even pleasing in black and white http://pix.tphoto.ca/random/kat102.jpg

I added the frequency separation technique to my toolbox about 6 or 7 months ago and really like it. Obviously not needed on every picture, but it really helps keep a more realistic skin texture. I have also used it to soften harsh shadow lines when I had my flash a touch too hot on a couple of shots. Like any processing, it's very easy to over-do it and lose the realism.

I think you did pretty well on these.
