Keep the D300. Same UI, same cards, same batteries and IIRC the same grip. Any other option reduces cross-compatibility. The D300s has a couple nice add-ons, but note its dual slots are CF+SD, not dual CF.

Luckily I have SD cards which I have been using with my D7000 which I will be putting up for sale soon.

My experience is that I really prefer carrying a single type of card across my lineup, even more so than a single battery type. I've run the CF/SD split (using a D300 and D40 back in 2008) and it annoyed the heck out of me. These days I'm D7100+NEX-5R, so SD all around but 2 battery types.

The only thing I don't like about the SD cards is that they seem so flimsy when compared to a CF card. Then again, I suppose there is a greater chance of bending pins with a CF card (which actually has never happened to me in camera).

The SD's wash up just fine...think they take a lil less time in the drier too. Just sayin'

Thanks for posting the comparison. It looks like the D7000 is better in low light. The bottom line is I prefer the control setup on the D300s which is virtually identical to my D700. I had thought about just keeping my D300 but, after a CF card crapped out on me during a paid event last night, I decided that I want the extra comfort of the dual cards that the 300s offers.

I prefer to adapt to the higher performing camera. the control differences are minor and the dual card system even though its SD will serve it purpose well. I go back and forth between this and the D4 which is to say the least a little different. in addition I have just added the D610 different yet again in minor ways too. it takes a few days but you'll drop right in. why go lateral when you can go forward and actually get something out of it?

Steven, you make a valid point about the D7000 having some superior capabilities to the D300 series. The main reason I am gravitating to the D300s is that I shoot a lot of school sports and carry both cameras with me. Having the identical set up on both comes in handy in that I don't have to think twice when changing settings in a hurry. Interestingly the D300s still sells for more than a used D7000 which, to me, tells me that people consider it to be a better value even though it has older technology. Plus I believe that the D300s has better weather sealing than the D7000 which is a benefit if I'm at a game and it starts raining.

I would go with the D7100 to gain the f8 AF sensors and better overall autofocus performance. I had a D300 and the D7100 has a better low light autofocus performance and same fps rate.

If you find yourself upgrading the D700 to a D800 the D800 and D7100 use the same batteries, chargers, and can use the same SDHC cards which is very convenient.

The D300s is 5 years old which is very old for a digital camera. Still very good but not on par with the D7100 (or even the D5300).

Unfortunately upgrading to a D800 isn't going to happen any time soon. I have champagne taste on a Social Security income.
