I have been looking for a zoom that would get me out to 400mm and decided to rent the Canon 100-400mm for a few days. I also recently acquired the 70D. Being a Nikon shooter I am having fun with the 70D. I love the touch screen and it for me just fits better in my hand than the Nikon D7100. If someone wants a lightweight combo that gets you to 400mm this one seems tough to beat. Tomorrow I am heading out with the Nikon D7100 and the new Nikon 80-400mm lens to see how it compares. Here are a few from today.

Nice to see more shots using the 70D and pro glass. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Steve,

I'm looking forward to hearing more about your 70D vs D7100 experiences, I've spent the better part of this past week comparison-shopping between these two cameras and decided on the 70D. Nice to see the lighter-weight DSLR's getting some attention on the forum.

I do have a question about using the touch screen for focusing with non-STM lenses...can you offer any feedback on touch-screen focusing vs. TTL focusing for stills? The reason I'm asking is that several user reports and videos are beginning to appear on the internet demonstrating a stuttering and noisy AF motor behavior when focusing via the screen (kind of like how a stepper motor would behave), but I haven't yet stumbled on an AF accuracy comparison between the two methods.

"Santa" did grab the two kit STM lenses, so we'll be finding out on our own in a few weeks!

Anyhoo, looks like you've got lots of nice new gear to experiment with...have fun and keep us posted!

Looking forward to see what you decide in the end. I'm fairly diehard in the Canon camp but if someone asked me what to buy at this price level, I would tell them D7100 and the new 80-400. If someone asked me what to buy up in the highest end price level, I would be 100% recommending Canon (5D3, 1DX, 1D4 and new markII super telephotos) as I think Canon has a huge advantage in that high end market but Nikon seems to have the newest and better gear in the mid range that you are looking at.

Have fun trying them out and it is refreshing to read about someone actually doing their own homework before deciding and not just relying on internet forums and fanboi opinions.

I agree. I'd only recommend the 70D for budding videographers where it's miles ahead of the Nikon.

A tour leader on my Iceland trip who had once be a Canon man and switched to Nikon when the D800 came out, told me though he would not buy a Nikon supertele until Nikon could match Canon's mk II lenses, which he was raving about. However, the DR advantage of his D800 was all too easy to see compared to my 5D III.

Jimmy - I am not sure if I will be much help with your question. I haven't had a chance to use the touch screen for much more than changing ISO and a few other of the settings.

Hi Steve,

Well, it looks like you made a decision not to stay with the 70D...

I imagine, if you can afford the D7100 and new 80-400, that would be the best camera/lens combo in this category.

I'm also wondering how the 70D + 100-400 compared.
Obviously there's a difference, but how much?
Worth the $2,500 to $3,800 price difference?

Steve, let us know how things went.

Sorry to be late with this but I wanted to give my thoughts on the Canon 70D with the Canon 100-400mm vs. the Nikon D7100 & the new Nikon 80-400mm. I only had a weekend to shoot with the Canon 100-400mm lens as I rented it from lensrentals.com. I am not one to analyze the hell out of images with a magnifying glass but my initial thoughts are that the Canon combination was capable of producing images just as good as the Nikon setup. For those who are looking for a lightweight zoom that will get you out to 400mm the Canon 100-400mm is a bargain for what you pay. Yes, it's a dated lens but my copy was very sharp and I did not see much of a difference with the Nikon 80-400mm lens which is about twice the price. In addition, the 100-400mm is much easier to handhold as the 80-400mm needs to go on a diet as it's kind of chunky. A few images are below. I decided to stick with the D7100 for a few reasons but enjoyed shooting with the 70 D.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the comparison, muchly appreciated. Looks like both camera's are stellar performers in this category, neither one taking a knock-our blow from the other. It was nice that you could take the time to get some hands-on comparisons for your own satisfactions, methinks just taking this extra step would save a lot of folks from "paralysis from over-analysis" when it comes to selecting their gear. I've always been a big proponent of folks trying gear out before laying out some "dinero".

Enjoy that D7100, and thanks, again!
