Funny how snow has become so difficult to expose in the era of automatic cameras.
Manual 35mm cameras were simpler and faster: in this case I zoomed in and took a light reading of the low section of sky (about 18% neutral grey), set the shutter and aperture manually, set the focus on infinity, zoomed to get the right comp, and took the shot.
It took way longer to type it than to do it.
Without hurrying, I'd normally take about ten seconds setting the camera before I decided on composition for the shot.
Fast and easy .
