Once you have one you will love it, I was in the exact camp your in had a D800e and x100 - I pre-ordered a DF at release used it for a day and sent it back- I then started seeing results from others and decided to try it again- fast forward a couple of months and I now Df and Sony RX1- sold my D800 and all my zooms also sold off the x100s in favor of the RX1 (mainly for the 35mm F2 lens- best 35 ever IMO) so my normal carry kit is the DF with 24mm 1.4 and 58mm 1.4 and the sony for the 35- My second carry option is the DF with the 35 Sigma and 85mm 1.4- travel and business trips (night out- family day trips just take the RX1) 2 weeks ago I thought I missed my D800 and purchased a used one on the board - I used it for a weekend and re-sold it my main reasons:
- light balance performance is so much better on the DF
- size and weight (I forgot how massive the d800 was)
- low light high ISO the DF kills the d800 IMO
- battery life on the DF is fantastic
What I don't like:
- I miss the pop up flash for fill in
- sd card slot with battery
- strap lug placement
- I wish the grip was a bit deeper - I keep my RRS L plate on to add a little more bulk
I hope they do a refresh and keep the same sensor
Overall I love the camera

Really digging this thread for its photos and experiences. Please keep it going. I've gone through a lot of emotions with this cam from pure excitement on initial announcement to disappointment when I found out about its "issues" and a lot of back and forth since then. I've played with the one on display in B&H multiple times and love its size and weight and ergonomics. I LOVE the sensor like I did the d700. I don't think I've ever sweat a piece of kit for such a long time! It seems like if they ever did a follow up, it could be a very refined and near perfect camera but its entirely possible there will never be a Dfs or Df2 or anything else quite like it that I can mount my nikkors on.
I never expected to have mulitple FX cameras at the same time and I don't think the Df can be my only SLR but now I'm back to thinking I should add it to my collection. I currently rock a D800 and an x100s. This is probably the first time I've thought that adding a new body would benefit me more than adding a new lens. Unfortunately, the next lens on my list is the 58 and it seems like an awesome pairing with the Df but I don't feel like blowing close to $5K in one shot on the red-headed stepchild Nikon kit from hell.
That being said, I have the 35 and 85 1.4Gs which are also probably awesome with the Df as well but getting less attention these days due to their age and being relatively standard albeit excellent primes. 50 I have covered with the 1.4g and the 1.2 AIS, so I'm really not lacking.
I guess I'm in the same camp as so many others. I'm indecisive but really think I'd love working with the camera once I got it in my hands and if it were $1000 cheaper, it would be a no-brainer....Show more →
