p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Df vs D800 vs 6D High ISO and DR

All shot raw, using same Voigtlander 40mm Ultron SL II @ f/5.6 F-Mount lens (6D via adapter). Processed in LR 4.4 all defaults except WB. Df file converted to look like a D4 so that it's readable by LR (via hack here). All downsampled to 8MP for comparison.

The full gallery of 100% crops and full 8MP images for ISO 3,200 through 102,400 can be found in the following link: Gallery

Here are select 100% crops:

ISO 100 shot -5EV and pushed +5EV in post, Crop #1
ISO 100 shot -5EV and pushed +5EV in post, Crop #2
ISO 12,800, Crop #1
ISO 12,800 Crop #2
ISO 102,400 Crop #1
ISO 102,400 Crop #2

Raw files:
Nikon D800 ISO 12,800 and 102,400
Nikon Df ISO 12,800 and 102,400
Canon 6D, ISO 12,800 and 102,400

You may even get better results from the Df once there is native raw support for it in LR.

BTW, the D800 can do 102K? Almost unfair test for that sensor at 12800 since that's in it's extended range unlike the other two.

1000 iso on my D90 looks like ISO12800 on the D800...wow.

From your pictures it looks like Df and 6D are very similar at 12800, while D800 has more noise...

Neat comparison, man that D800 can be pushed around!

The max ISO on the D800 is 25k so it has to be shot two shots underexposed and pushed in post for the 102,400 equivalent.

Downsampling skew the results by altering the image files. Why would you do that and think the results would be accurate?

Someone needs to explain to me how downsampling affects pixel pitch. What does downsampling do besides create smaller files?

Down sampling is always the last thing to be done...always....the prob is you cant downsample an image, and it still stay raw (I've never worked with DPP, but in PS, once you leave camera raw, it's not raw anymore)......did you push these as raw files, or as tif files?

All processing was done in raw, then downsampled during the export to TIFF. The 100% crops are from the exported TIFFs.

Any easy Lightroom fix for the purple shadows of the D800 when at very high ISOs? Maybe someone has a saved preset for 6400, 12800 etc that they would like to share?

You can adjust the shadow tint a few clicks in the green direction. That will take most of the purple cast out of the shadow but it will also alter the overall color accuracy so it should be evaluated on an image-by-image basis.

From your experience, would you pick the Green channel in the Tone Curve module and adjust there? I'm just looking to know somewhere to start when I see it happen to me with my D800E that should be arriving in to me in the next week (I'm crossing my fingers). Thanks for the suggestion .
