Good Specs. I am an amateur only but I still dont like zoom out lenses. I mean front barrel extends out. Doesnt seem to be weather proof.

I know some L lenses, including the Canon 24-105, have extending front thingies. Aren't L lenses weather sealed to some extent?

have extending front thingies

. This just cracked me up Yes, the barrel of Canon’s 24-104 (and the 24-70 as well) extend from the lens as you zoom, and this is typical for shorter to mid range zooms. Most L-series lenses have a rubber dust gasket at the mount, but I would’t call them “weather-proof.”

For the Canon mount?

Not really. It'll have to prove to be an outstanding lens- not just a good lens- to attract EF-mount users. F-mount users will likely find it highly desirable.

If it were $300 cheaper perhaps Canon 24-105s are dirt cheap nowadays.

Why go third party when the Canon lens is so well respected and only slightly more expensive at retail and cheaper used or white box from a kit.

The answer to that question is what we're waiting to find out .

If it have better IQ of course. We don't know yet. It's not like the Canon version is so fantastic that it can't be improved

Nothing is so fantastic that it can't be improved. Leica's 50mm Summicron was described for decades as "Perfect" (by Leica and others), but sure enough, they improved it.

Show me a better zoom in the 24-105L's range and speed? The 24-70 f/2.8 class are mostly better, but those are twice the price and much heavier. Nikon's 24-120 f/4 has its fans, and better range, but I wouldn't say its IQ is better and its build is actually a notch below.

The Sigma may be great, but it would have to be really superb to trump the Canon, which is also a great lens for what it is.

It looks like a great standard zoom, well up to specs with the Canon and probably the best in class on other mounts!

It's still in stock for Canon EF and has been continuously unless I missed a day. I don't think the lens is very popular. Perhaps it will be cheaper later on.

The real benefit of this lens is buried in the test charts. It's light transmission. DxOMark measured T/5.1 with the 24-105/L and T/4.2 with this Sigma. Couple that with better edge performance and there's not much reason to prefer to the L if you're buying new.

The new Sigma is sharper across the frame than the L, and is at least half a stop faster, while matching the Canon on CA and trading distortion results, falling behind only in vignetting (but again, it's faster).

I'd like to try one out some time .

Unless you can get the L in a kit, or buy the kit lens. The current 6D/5DIII kits put the effective price of the lens at $650 or so.

If I were buying straight out..I'd look at Sigma's $899.00 vs Canon's $1199.00 price however.
