Yeah, who gets excited about a photo of a squirrel in a tree?

I spend most of my time photographing people, not so much animals. I really enjoy the thought of photographing wildlife and nature, but don't have the patience for it. These squirrels spend quite a bit of time in our trees in the front yard, preparing for the brutal Chicago winter. We don't see much of them once the snow is on the ground and frozen solid through March.

I'm really interested in hearing how you guys would have shot this differently. This is shot with a D4 and 70-200 lens. 1/1000, f/2.8. ISO 1250.

Thanks,
Ron

1. Wide version. I liked the esoteric look of the barren branches and seedlings.

2. Cropped version to focus on the squirrel.

I like both versions, I usually go for heavier crops as I like to see the details closer up. I take lots of squirrel images also but don't often post them here as people prefer eagles Here is my squirrel thread if you want to have a look. https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1253985/0#11932847

I don't think you really could have shot this any differently as the squirrel was way up in the tree.

I enjoyed your squirrel thread, Geoff, and saw that you shot them with a 600mm lens. I'm thinking my 70-200 lens is just too short for serious wildlife photography. I've always known that, but don't do enough wildlife to justify a bigger lens.

@Reeftank1, thanks, Brian! That's pretty cool that you prefer squirrels!

I prefer #2 here. You had some challenging backlight but I think you exposed it well, good job.

I think the 70-200 would be fine for most squirrel photography, I am of course always out shooting eagles and other birds that I need my 600. If I was only hunting squirrels I think you could be patient enough for them to get close as they aren't all that shy if you stay still for a while.

I hate to admit it, but that thought was the first one I had also when I originally viewed the images
