Any of you all use it? Subject matter? If so, what does it do (or not) for you? Does it effectively create a roughly x2 crop "sensor"? If so would that transform a 300mm lens to 600mm lens in terms of FOV?

Anthony, I use it sometimes in soccer to get 7FPS. Another benefit is that the AF points cover the whole area although I wish the viewfinder would black out the cropped image but it doesn't, so framing isn't as nice.

Love 1.3x for sports, animals, and cars. Drop the IQ to 12-bit compressed, and you have a nearly 2 second buffer with super fast recovery.

I am totally for using the 1.3x crop mode as well. for these reasons.. and the 7fps.. just one frame faster but i like it..
As well as significantly reduced size of raw files and workflow time.. and storage..etc

1.3x crop is great. Don't listen to the people who say "crop in post" - anything you can do to reduce the amount of time spent post processing is good. If you have no use for the area outside of the 1.3x crop, why would you want to keep the data, thus needing the process and store it?

Not that you shouldn't keep edge data you're not sure about, but I use the crop mode all the time to reduce storage requirements and the amount of data I need to process/crop.

You're correct about the FOV it gives you - roughly a 2x "zoom" in terms of image data. I often use it for wildlife - it increases the amount you can store in the buffer and the FPS of the camera.

Thanks so much guys... that'll teach me to read KR and give too much weight to his dismissive commentary about the 1.3x

For video, it's the only way to get 60fps at 1080i, which means slow motion special effects.

He thinks the D7100 and D600 produce the same images. Nuff said.

Yup, I'm still using it with the ancient D2Xs. 1.3 crop kicks some ass when it needs to.

I've for BIF's (fast, small ducks) the 1.3 and the 51pt coverage is very much worth while. I've not done any, but I think it will rock in Macro also. With the 95mb cards at 12 bit compressed and the 7 fPs I've been getting about 14 images before it slows to 4.5 fps.

thanks guys,

I think Ken was probably giving dismissive commentary about mother's milk when he was 3 months old.

What effective f-stop then does, e.g., a 300/f4 have, within the context of using the (almost) 2x crop? Does it increase by a factor of two, as would be the case if I were to use a x2 teleconverter, or, an effective FOV equivalent to a 600mm lens but with now an f-stop of 8? Or, would I have effectively a 600mm/f4 lens on my D7100?

Visually, it would be equivalent to 600mm FOV with the DOF of F/8, though the light coming through would not be impacted like if you used a 2.0x teleconverter. It would still get the same amount of light as an F/4 lens.

Thank you, Sir. That would seem to be a pretty good outcome, at least for the kind of shooting I'd do with that setup.

Best part is, you can assign the 1.3x crop toggle to one of the buttons by the mount, and quickly switch between full and crop mode at a moment's notice. Just be careful, since like hijazist said, the area that's left out in crop mode doesn't get blacked out. The camera just adds a frame around the edge of the crop area, which can be easy to miss in the heat of the moment.
