I know this is an old article, but at least it may be a step in the right direction for this long overdue lens. We'll just have to keep on holding our breath and wait. http://nikonrumors.com/2013/08/21/nikon-planning-to-release-a-new-nikkor-af-s-300mm-f4g-vr-lens.aspx/

That was somewhat old article, had been discussed here, and then nothing happened.

It may come tomorrow or never.
And it will probably be $2,200 versus the current "D" model for $1,369

This is another reason Nikon has failed to live up to the consumer's expectations. Reflected in this thread. https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1256870

Canon did the same thing with the 200-400. But it did finally happen. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Well, since the article said maybe 1-3 months for an announcement, it might come today.

And on Monday the "outdated" 300 f4 price will plunge making it an even better value.

Probably the best thing coming with new announcements is the significant price drops on the older technology and people selling them on our B&S forum

What is the definition of "plunge" here?

I bought one last month for $1,134 on sale at Amazon. Brand new, USA version.
Now it's back up to $1,379.

So, a plunge might be to $900 ?? Since I jumped on the sale deal, I can live with that.
That would be a plunge from $1,379 I suppose, of $479...

It sure isn't going to suddenly drop price to $500 for a new one.
What will happen is both will be offered. Old version for $1,379... New version for $2,200
There you go...

Even if it did go to $500, I bet many here would fail to see a bargain and put their money into it.

The smiley after the statement is meant to show it was not really serious. Wishful thinking maybe?

But to answer the question, I would consider $900 a "plunge". I plan to buy one in january, even at the current price, but one can always hope to luck into a lower price, right? I would be very happy to get one for the price you paid.

A new 300/4 with VR would be much pricier than the current lens, so the latter will not change much in price. It's not a reason to delay purchasing what is available now.

Unless one has bionic arms of course VR is very useful for many purposes. For the most part the usefulness of optical stabilization is a moot controversy from the late 1990s-early 2000s, just as autoexposure was in the 1970s or AF was in the 1980s. No lens 200mm or longer from Nikon or Canon is being introduced without it.

I would love VR on the 300/4. And yes, it would cost 2300-2500. But VR in a lens like that would make for a perfect lightweight tele solution.

I wonder how much they would loose pricing it that high. I'm sure I'm not alone but for that price, I'd rather spend a few hundred more on a used 300 2.8

Edit- I've found quite a few for around 3k after doing some searching

Last three 300mm f/2.8G lenses I am seeing on this buy and sell went for between $3,600 and $4,800 depending on what version.

That's more than a few $100 dollars.
Some may feel comfortable, others won't.

I look forward to the new f/4 vr version. It may never come, but I'm patient...
Personally, I think it will be more like $2,200 which is really pushing it from $1,379

But, the same jump occurred with the 80-400mm
