Someone over at the Canon board responded to that with "Way to kill the power switch"

What is the life expectancy for the switch? Have anybody experienced problems with a worn out power switch?

If you really want to delve into it....

The MTBF figure for a product can be derived from laboratory testing, actual field failure data or prediction models such as MIL-HDBK-217 (the Military Handbook for Reliability Prediction of Electronic Equipment, published by the US Department of Defense).
MIL-HDBK-217 contains failure-rate models for various parts used in electronic systems, such as integrated circuits, transistors, diodes, resistors, capacitors, relays, switches and connectors. These failure-rate models are based on a large amount of field data that was analyzed and simplified by the Reliability Analysis Center and Rome Laboratory at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, N.Y.

Ah thanks, but I don't intend to dwell into the theory of MTBF

General purpose rotary switches are usually rated to ~10 000 operations.

turn the camera off when you're not actively shooting. if it's anything like the rx1 it'll start faster from off than from sleep anyway.

Huh?? What is wrong with their sleep mode?

don't know, but every Sony camera I've had has a ~1 sec lag 70% of the time to wake up.

Stop taking photos of leaves and crap you won't care about

In other words, take less photos.
