How do you store prints that aren't in active use ... say roughly between 12 x 16 & 16 x 20?
(smaller/larger okay also).

I'm thinking about starting to print more to keep on hand for unknown future use (competition, sale, gift, decor, display, samples, etc., but would like to keep them safe for a modest $$$. Are they best stored flat, on edge, mounted, matted, bagged, etc. I've got a small room and closet that I have a blank slate on for a mini-office / storage area. Curious at what I might buy/build for storing prints.

Thanks.

Personally, in a dry cupboard inside archival portfolio boxes, and in archival print sleeves when and where possible - print size dependent.

For example: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/442982-REG/Archival_Methods_32_111_Side_Loading_Print_Sleeves.html

This type of thing: http://www.gaylord.com/listing.asp?H=3&PCI=128198

Outside of boxes, but in sleeves, you could store prints in something like this:

That thing Paul posted a picture of is called a "map cabinet". In Australia they are made by the same companies that make filing cabinets, and are of similar painted sheet metal. Generally they are around 1.3m x 0.9m.

I never unmount/unframe them and just stack what's not in use in my storage room. When friends come over I give them away if someone shows interest or someone needs to fill some wall space.

I was mostly thinking pre-framed.

Flat file or blueprint cabinets should meet your needs. Get a used one for pennies on the dollar.
