I need to take a 645 colour negative to around 120-150cm on the longest side.

Should I be looking at drum scanning?

Anyone recommend a good service?

I've used scanning services before, but only for small / efficient things (lower res, quick turn around), nothing this big before. So recommendations are welcome...

Thanks!

after pricing out options and battling between services that do large scale scanning I opted to buy the v700 epson scanner and then use silvfast software. The results have been pretty great for the price point and I've done prints from the scans with good results at 60 inches (on fabric though). Food for thought

Hey, thanks, I've thought about that before, but I'm not interested in that side of it.

When I shoot film, I factor in processing and scanning by a good lab and it gives me the balance I like.

If I'm doing a huge print like this, I'd rather have a really great scan. I admire what the v700 and similar can do, but I'd want more, and really just for someone to do it for me

I don't blame you. I have 1000 shots I needed scanned for printing but the price of a drum scan was just too insane (about $13 per file) for that amount on my end. What has been the biggest hiccup is not the quality of the v700, I think it's very good in fact, but like you the time invested to do it. It's turned into quite a project.lol

Well I'm sure it all has its own rewards and qualities. I know many love scanning, and I can't say I won't buy one someday.

For the past could of years I used a small film camera for day-to-day stuff that formed mini personal projects. Really helped alongside wedding work. And after that, the last thing I want to do is sit in front of a computer and edit my film shots... After doing all the wedding editing.. Kind of defeats the purpose for me personally :-)

I've now switched to a digital for personal work though, so my insanity levels may rise shortly...

If you are shooting film and scanning on a flatbad for output (especially small negs like 645) you are leaving so much detail on the table. A print this size from 645 is really huge.

Unless they are very high resolution drum scanners can suffer from grain aliasing with colour neg and a couple of labs I have spoken running drum scanners have even recommended imacon scans over drum scans. When you select a lab I would talk to them about their experience scanning negs because if all they do is chromes they may not have the skill to do a great job.

The lab I used has closed but I have heard good things about these guys:
http://www.ianscovell.com/Scovellab.html (hassy X5)
http://cheapdrumscanning.com/ (drum scans, don't be put off by the name Joe Cornish gets his scans there!)

Loxley Colour up here is Scotland have a justifiably good name.

Haven't had anything scanned in years but it was pretty good then and I would imagine they have come a long way since then.

Having looked on their site it looks like you you would need to have prints done as well.

Don't know if thats suitable for you mate?

Great info, thanks Mark!

@BK: In honesty the print will probably come from Loxley as well. I think I've asked them for info i the past and their scanning seemed a bit basic, but worth checking with them I guess to refresh.

Can't speak about Loxley's scans but they don't even mention which scanner they use or any technical info on their site - they are a print/album lab. I would strongly suggest you stick with places that specialise in it unless you go somewhere like Metro Imaging.

Yeah, that's what I intend to do. I sent Ian an email earlier to see what he thinks.

I use Ian Scovell very regularly for high res Imacons of Xpan Velvia film. Perfect everytime with very little PS to do after. Definitely recommend him.
I did try cheapdrumscanning site also, but I rather the Imacon scanning personally and Ian does higher resolution for a much better price.

Any experience with colour negatives from Ian?

Emailed him nearly a week ago now, no reply...

Only transparency sorry, I don't shoot on neg. Strange he hasn't got back, he's usually on the ball. Might be away or something.
