p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Small flash for 6D

I would like to find a small compact flash to use with my 6D. I already have a 430EX, but I am looking for something small to carry for fill flash or use when it is just too dark for non flash photography.

I thought I already had the perfect solution in the Sunpack RD2000, but despite it working with all my other Canon cameras it doesn't work with the 6D. It appears there is no firmware fix to make it function (If I am wrong please someone let me know). I really like the form factor of the Sunpack as it folds into a nice rectangular size that can slip into your pocket easily.

It appears my only other choices are the 270EX or 90EX. Although not large (especially the 90X) they are both odd shaped and not as easy to carry as the Sunpack. Are there any other options available that I don't know about?

If it is only the 270EX or 90EX I would like any opinions of one vs the other. Is the 90 that much more portable than the 270? With the great high ISO of the 6D I don't mind upping the ISO to compensate for the ultimately lower power of a more compact flash. Also this is for casual use as I can always mount the bigger flash for more 'serious' stuff.

Thanks.

I have all three mentioned.

I have the original 270EX and I find it a better gun than the Sunpak and realistically it's much the same size.

The 90EX is versatile as it can be a trigger but as a gun it's underpowered, slow to recycle and basic.

I'd go with a 270EX or 270EXII

I got the 90 with my M and used it on the 5D3 and it works really well .
270 is probably the better option as a flash but I like the 90 for its trigger As well

Good choice; the 270EX is more powerful, has a manual 'zoom' and it tilts so you can bounce

Another vote for the 270EX II. It's an excellent compact solution on my 5D III.

I own both the 430EX II and 90EX. Yes, the 430EX is a bit of a pain to carry if you don't need the power so I leave the 90EX in my bag as the missing popup for my 5D2. The 90EX is really tiny and light. I'm not sure what you mean by "odd shaped." The 90EX is basically about the size and shape of a LP-E6 and a small protrusion for the shoe foot. It fits perfect in my jean pocket. I don't think you'd cause anybody to think you were "happy to see them" with such a wee flash bump. I wear slim cut jean and can barely tell it's in the pocket. You might notice it if you wear uber skinny jeans with women style pockets (shallow).

As a flash, well, obviously it is only good for close fill and pops, but that's all I need most of the time. I actually bought it to trigger my 430EX II but I seem to use it more as happy hour fill flash...

Me too! Thanks for the heads up.
I've been looking for something smaller than the 430EX

I rarely go out without the 270 on a body if I am shooting people. It is great fill flash.

270XII works great for me. I don't have the 90.

I have the 270EX and 90EX. Both are nice, both are worth owning. Flexibility vs portability. If you can only own one, the 270EXII is the most flexible and it will take a small light modifier. Between the two, I use my 90EX more.

What about old 220EX? Fixed head, unfortunately, but there's central point red AF assist, hi speed sync and 4x AA batteries, so it recycles quickly.

I have the 220EX and 270EX (as well as bigger ones). I prefer the 270EX over 220EX because of bounce, which I use a lot for on-camera flash.

This is a prime example of differing preferences - on my side, I am glad I have some of the red light for AF and no flash stroboscope.

I too prefer the 220EX for the near IR AF assist. I hate the disco light assist so much I disable it. I keep OSCII in my bag and can bounce the 220EX just fine albeit it's too weak for bounce save for right quarters. I mainly bounce off white cards for macro. However, the 220EX uses four AA and is heavy for such a wee flash. With Eneloops it recycles really fast, besting my 430EX II.
