p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Pfeiffer Beach Portal, Big Sur - Take Two

I had spent the better part of an afternoon in late October trying to photograph various elements located within the Pfeiffer Beach area of Big Sur. The iconic image of this area is the setting sun illuminating water spray away from the portal, but that happens around Winter Solstice. I would have been thrilled to get that image, but my timing was off by a month and a half. So, instead of that, I tried to capture the image of the water spray lit up by the setting sun within the portal. Below are two images that are results of that effort. One is a closeup, and the other shot a little farther out but uses the reflections as a leading line to the portal.

Personally, I like the first image. Please let me know which one you like and why. Your comments and criticism are always welcome.

Thank you for your time.
Maji

I think I like the second one better; I'm not sure I can say why, but I do like the reflection, and also the wave action and the colors are a bit more appealing to me. Good job on both.

I like the first one better - intense color of the sun and just a smidgen of a reflection in the water. But both are terrific shots. Great work!

The second for me, by a narrow margin. My mind is having a touch of trouble with the waterline in the first. Seems like it is rotated a bit clockwise. It could be just wave action, but once I noticed that I kept trying to figure it out a bit. The composition of the second and the wave action that you've captured work very well for me, even if it is not quite as dramatic as the first. Both are very nice.

+1
I think it is different from the usual takes on this scene.
The reflection on the water adds a nice element

Great shots Maji. I think #2 for me too. I love the reflection, and it's different than normal.

well they are both nice. not fair you ask me to choose....
I like #1 with the emphasis on the tunnel light.
Hence, with #2, I look more at the light in the tunnel wanting a bit more of this in the comp.
very nice images, both of them.

Hey Maji,

Nice work here with these, you had a fun time it looks like. I do like #2, but I wish that the keyhole was centered from left to right, rather than the bottom of the reflection being centered. You have the red light centered, but not the opening of the keyhole. The shot feels unbalanced as it is, but maybe that's just me.

Thank you Doug and Jim.

Jim, I will try and see if I have a similar frame or crop this one differently as per your suggestion.

Thank you again for your guidance.
