p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Skagit Valley minus the Swans and Geese

Spent Friday wandering the Skagit valley in search of snow geese and swans, but also found a variety of other birds shown below. During migration season, this area hops with wonderful views of the Cascades, Olympics, and lots of bird opportunities. I'll have other images up tomorrow. Hope you enjoy them, any suggestions on improving the images would be appreciated.
John

Northern Shrike, love the beak !

American Kestral, wish he would have perched on a branch

Glaucous-winged Gull perhaps, in winter plummage

Great Blue Heron reflecting on something :) Made the suggested removal of some out of focus shrub in the reflection

Very nice captures John. In the last I suggest cloning out the bright wood in the reflection. It will make the photo a stunner.

There has been a Kestrel hanging around Rawlins Road for the past month or so. The only time I see it is when its sitting on a wire....... A friendly GBH is usually working the drainage ditch at the end of Rawlins Road. No snow geese today and the swans were on the north side of the Skagit River and also east of Maupin Road off Rawlins Road. Still waiting for the Short-eared owls to make their presence known.

Nice set John. Yeah, hard to find a kestral perching on something other than a wire. Like the GBH reflection shot.

Nice set of images...Great shot of the Shrike, but love how you captured the Heron in the last one. I'll be heading into the area tomorrow to see what the eagle forecast is going to be.

Yes thanks to both of you, I was amazed at how he looked when I got home. His beak was quite striking as well as his pose on the tip of the branch.

Thank you for the detailed report, this was my first visit to the area to shoot pictures of wildlife, so was fun exploring. I got lost a few times, so don't remember where the Kestral was. The Shrike was off Fir Island rd at a wildlife area. The Heron off of Wylie road in a ditch.

haha, thanks George, I won't be too hard on myself with the wire perch Yeah, the GBH was there as I drove down the road, stopped, and shot it, was great fun.

How did you manage the Kestrel shot? Every time I try to photograph them they fly, even when I stay in the car and move slowly. Very nice shots of all the species.

BTW, I think the gull is a Glaucous-winged Gull rather than Mew. The bill is big and heavy, Mew has a very dainty small bill. Very nice shot of the bird though, better than any I have.

I was very fortunate with the Kestral, first one I have ever imaged. The time between my first and last shot of him was 26 seconds, and with the 500+1.4x I was able to be some distance from him. I was lucky

I'm not good at gulls and as I look at the guide books, I think your more right than me so I revised the title, thank you !!
