had a great clear night and an idea for an image.

8 x 30s dark frames
75 x 30s bright frames (stacked for trails)
1 x 123s foreground exposure after sunset
1 x rock detail shot before sunset

one little anecdote:
this beach at night was a trippy ride. The sand is inhabited by some sort of bioluminescent creatures that respond to you walking near them and compressing the sand by lighting up and glowing a nice soft blue. so i was walking along the beach and had my foot steps be lit from underneath by glowing dots. it was like walking on lightning. i had a lot of fun with it while my exposures were ticking away.

any idea what kind of animal it could be?!?

Gee willikers, Killer!
This is spectacular!
I hesitate to even mention this- but to me the hint of star trails in the reflection is a tiny distraction.
I scrolled to eliminate them- and kinda liked the result.

Wow.. what a scene! I love the expanse of the frame including almost half of the frame with just star trails.
I always look for breathing space in the photo. To me those breathing spaces are as or more important than the main objects.
Here your image has stellar color, comp. Thanks for your much effort to culminate the result. Lovely!

Tyler,

Good job on the star trails and I like the orange glow. I agree with Charlie on the trail reflections on the foreground. It's a bit distracting. I guess because it doesn't show enough of the trail from the above it just looks like light aberrations. Just my thought on it.

Your experience sounds very similar to what happens during red tides. Walking on the wet sand at the beach will create faint flashes of blue light. That usually happens more so in the warmer months though.

Hey Tyler,

What a cool shot, I like the look of how this came together. As for the glowing things in the sand... man... I just saw an article in this last week or so on them. Hopefully someone will know.

Now I need to ask, why 8 dark frames? When I have used the stacking software, I only used 1 dark frame.

Oh, and as for the reflections in the sand, I have seen shots where they distracted, but for me here, they work fine.

Seeing this shot has me really itching to get out with my new 14-24mm Nikon to go give it a whirl with some star shots!

The glowing is from a species of bioluminescent algae. Check this out! Pretty amazing when it is concentrated.

Hey, very nice.

The glowing things in the sand are reflections of the star trails (off the wet sand). If you copy the image, flip it vertical and align the horizons on top of each other (photoshop equivalent of an optical reflection), you can see that the stars and angles line-up perfectly.

That's a really great effect, one I've not seen before on star trail images.

i usually try to do a dark frame every 10 bright frames. it helps even out the noise as the dark frames are averaged and subtracted from the bright frames.

thanks for the comment on the reflected stars. i took a look at it with and without and i could really go either way. they dont really distract for me so im going to leave em.

get out and get some stars Jim! thanks for the comments!
