The first time I went to Antelope I was concerned with using a tripod and making every shot level.
When I got my slides back from Kodak I realized that the definition of level had little meaning in a place like that, so the next couple of trips (also long ago and before the crowds of people) I frequently took the camera off the tripod and pursued the lines of striation and the curves of erosion with no regard to what was level.
I like both approaches overall, but the freedom of hand-holding the camera is more freeing to me.
