p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Insurance on alt gear?

I have amassed a small collection of alt gear and vintage lenses. What's a good option for getting all this stuff insured from theft and damage worldwide? Do insurance companies cover items no longer manufactured, under fair market value, and who determines that value? I'm new to photography insurance so looking for some tips on where to look to get started. I am non-commercial and will probably be renting (so no homeowners insurance) for the forseeable future. Thanks!

I believe most renter's insurance will cover your gear.

It will but only if something happens to it at your place of residence. What about if you're traveling and you gear gets stollen or damaged? I'm actually interested in this topic as well.

I wouldn't put gear on your renters or homeowners policy. not only can the coverage be limited, especially if abroad, accidental damage, mysterious disappearance etc, but filling a claim can result in a policy cancellation, which is something you certainly don't want in regards to importance coverage like homeowners

Dedicated equipment polices are quite affordable and specifically will protect your gear, home or away, from theft, accidental breakage etc.

Usually said policy will include some liability coverage as well. Mine is 2 million I believe, which also can be a nice thing to have.

Finally, insure your gear for replacement value, not new cost. I've seen more times people will insure a lens, say a 400 2.8 which they bought 5 years ago for $6000 at new value, when the cost to get a new one today is more like $9000.

I think I pay about $700/year for about $30k of equipment coverage with Fireman's Fund. $2 million liability, computers and other equipment is covered in that as well

I have my gear insured through a guy named Sammy. I hope he's legit.

I have a rider on my HO policy that covers all my camera gear, anywhere. Suggest you contact you insurance agent for most accurate info.
