I wouldn't put gear on your renters or homeowners policy. not only can the coverage be limited, especially if abroad, accidental damage, mysterious disappearance etc, but filling a claim can result in a policy cancellation, which is something you certainly don't want in regards to importance coverage like homeowners
Dedicated equipment polices are quite affordable and specifically will protect your gear, home or away, from theft, accidental breakage etc.
Usually said policy will include some liability coverage as well. Mine is 2 million I believe, which also can be a nice thing to have.
Finally, insure your gear for replacement value, not new cost. I've seen more times people will insure a lens, say a 400 2.8 which they bought 5 years ago for $6000 at new value, when the cost to get a new one today is more like $9000.
I think I pay about $700/year for about $30k of equipment coverage with Fireman's Fund. $2 million liability, computers and other equipment is covered in that as well
