p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Transcend 32GB 1000x Slow to Transfer

Hello. Today I picked up a Transcend 32gb compact flash card for my 5D Mark III and it seems to work fine in the camera, no issue there. However, when i go to transfer the photos to my computer, the transfer speed is pretty slow. 1-2mb/sec. I was using an 8gb card I had and that was fine, 20mb/sec I believe. Tested this by taking 4 shots and then transferring them via picasa (out of habit) and via windows explorer.

My question is whether the size of the card is affecting the time it takes to simply see how many pictures are even there and then slowing things down. Or do I have some other problem.

What really stumps me is CrystelDiskMark, a benchmark program shows a 120/90 read/write speed. Much slower than advertised, but way faster than what I am getting on my own. Admittedly the above test isn't real world, but 1-2mb/sec? Not sure what I am missing here.

Lastly, I tried this after only an in camera format, windows format to exfat and then the Transcend utility (complete) followed by an in camera format.

Any help is appreciated. Not sure if it is the card or simply user error. :-p

Thanks!

The old, is it a genuine card question. Or, is it faulty?

I doubt it isn't genuine given I got it and B&H Photo. Faulty is another story.

Sighs. I think my older usb 3.0 card reader is dead or something. Just tried the one the card came with and it worked fine. *hangs head in shame*

Make sure your reader supports UDMA 7.

Lol. Worst part was I thought to check the other reader moments after posting. Though, like you said, if this is the worst thing, I'm doing alright.

Good thinking. I was trying to figure out why one old one worked fine on my older card and was super quick, but the new card was really slow. Not supporting UDMA would likely be the reason. Good news is it at least worked, albeit painfully slow.

Imagine taking a few hundred photos only to have to wait likely 30 minutes to transfer them?

I use Lexar USB3 reader. If you buy the Transcend cards at B&H, you get a free USB3 reader with the card as the OP pointed out. USB3 is much faster to transfer than the USB2 in the camera.

I used a reader, though if the camera supported usb 3.0, I may do that. I remember years ago I tried transferring directly from the camera and it was painfully slow. Made it a habit of using a reader. Plus I don't have to lug the camera around and make sure the cable reaches.

Ah. Is the camera usb 2.0 for sure? I guess the 3.0 is pretty big and may not be doable.

Yes, the Lexar Professional Workflow CFR1 is a really well made reader, fast and is UDMA 7 compatible as well.

I belive you could download update card-reader firmware, that helped me with similar issue.

Will give that a try. Would be nice to have both to use. Leave the smaller reader in my camera bag so I always it. No worry of having no way to easily transfer the files over.
