p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Jpegs from iMac to Windows problem ,Need Help !!

Dear All

I have just moved over to apple for all my Photo needs (using the new 2013 iMac 27" 3.2) and I have come across a problem, my work uses Windows XP and they have tried to link images into Adobe InDesign CS5 and its saying that the images are not valid. - I saved images as Jpegs and you can view them however when setting them out on InDesgin it won't work at all.

Can anyone give me any tips on making my images "Windows friendly" so I can send images to people who use windows so they have no problem using my images.

Just a side note myself and my work both use CS5.

any information would be gratefully recieved !!

A JPEG is a JPEG. As with most image file formats, there's nothing to do to make them "Windows friendly".

On the Windows computers at work, do they not work with anything, or is it only InDesign that's the issue? How are the files getting from your Mac to the computers at work?

this is what I thought, a Jpeg is a Jpeg, - as far as i know the only issue is with InDesgin and I copied the files to a USB to give to work.

what is your USB drive formatted? It needs to be FAT 32 for the PC to read it with maximum compatibility.

Are the files saved with a .jpg extension? I often receive JPEGs from Mac users that have no extension.

Hi All

I didn't know about the extension but I have changed in setting to show all extensions and I have not thought about the USB drive , I will see if these solve the mysterious problem

The Mac will format either HFS+ or FAT. If you did HFS+, the problem wouldn't exist because the PC would be totally UNABLE to read anything. The PC doesn't support HFS+ w/o additional ($) driver software. So, you can sort of logically assume it's in FAT format.

Would be helpful know the steps taken to place the files in a graphics frame in an InDesign doc.

Some questions.

1. Did you copy the files from the usb drive to a local drive on the windows box?
2. Can you open the files in another app on the win box like Paint?
3. When you actually try to place them do they show in InDesign's place dialog as a valid file?
4. Did they place initially but are not showing when later opening the doc?
5. Have you checked the "Links" panel to confirm the links to the jpg's are valid?

I'm an InDesign plugin developer, you can PM me if desired.

Mike
