p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Water Damaged 5DII - Worth It?

I am looking on eBay, and found a water damaged 5DII at $300 currently. If I bought it, I was planning on sending it to Canon to have them diagnose it. The seller states that the body does not power on at all. However, it looks as if the body is in relatively good condition. If this is worth it, I was planning on using it as a backup to my 5DIII since I'm shooting a lot of time lapse lately, and don't want to burn out my 5DIII shutter too quickly.

Any thoughts on this? Is it not even worth the gamble? Would Canon even fix it since it's considered water damaged?

I actually sent the the seller a message asking exactly that question. I'm still waiting to hear back.

Don't know about the 5D II, but I have dropped my 5D III in water twice. Both times dead.
1) First time in salt water. Cost to fix everything was ~$700 with 30% CPS discount.
2) Second time in fresh water. Cost to fix was ~$450 with 30% CPS discount.
Still using the same 5D III. Both times came back perfect.
Hope this helps.

I would assume the seller has tried most things and just given up, so I would doubt it would be a cheap fix, people don't usually sell 5D2's cheap without a reason

If you knew someone who could take the thing apart and try a repair maybe it would be worth a punt

Personally I wouldn't buy it.

I wouldnt touch it.

1. if its "at $300 currently" then I assume its on an auction listing . meaning what its at at the moment is meaningless . its likely to go for more than 300 .

2. if its repairable then its not going to be cheap . even at 300 plus repair i bet it would get close to the cost of a decent working 5D2 . but if your considering sending it in for canon to tell you then its going to cost you at least $301 (see above) plus the cost to sell it plus ebay costs (when you decide its not worth it and pass it on to someone else)

3. if you really want to gamble 300+ plus repair costs (so assume at least $5-600 total) then your better of walking ito a casino and sticking it all on red or black . 1 spin and your either out of money or have $1k-1200 in your pocket .that would buy a good 5D2 .

4. if not comfortable with above , then if your just looking to backup the 5D3 becuase you dont want to wear it out then save the cash to service the 5D3 when it needs a service

if it was fresh water and the guy dried it out quickly then maybe he could have saved it (you can get mobile phone dryers for when someone drops it down the loo ). but you have to assume he didnt and the thing will be a mess inside . salt water and it would be a no no straight away .

I had a 5D original that was damaged by salt water spray; not dead, but had problems with the shutter release switch. I sent it to Canon and they returned it saying it could not be fixed. Some time later I sent it to KEH.com and they fixed it without any problem for, if I remember correctly, $250.00.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Just by reading your responses, I think I'm going to pass on it. The auction still has 8 hours left, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it go up to around $500.

Salt water kills things pretty effectively. If it's freshwater there's a chance of saving it

I'd keep well away from it.

Even if fresh water, stay away. It's a huge risk. I'd only buy it for say $50.

You would likely find that Canon would refuse to repair it. The reason I say that is I sent in a 70-200 f/2.8L that had a binding zoom ring. I was told it had water damage and they refused to service it. I talked with them and still it was a NO!

As I thought about it there is likely just too many sensitive parts that may at the moment not be defective but will most likely show up later defective and Canon did not want the responsibility of a repair that is likely only a temporary fix.........Good choice to stay away IMO

Twice? Damn. Was it the BR strap?

Not a BR strap.

First time was at a local beach. While adjusting my tripod to shoot sunset, I stupidly put my open bag containing the 5D Mark III down on a rock. A big wave came and drenched the camera.

Second time was in Acadia when I was shooting a stream. The rocks were slippery, and as I was packing to leave I slipped and fell into the stream. That was immediately after I took this photo:

Just to give you an idea for a 5DII, to replace the shutter and the sensor with a 60% CPS Discount was $750. The 16-35I I sent in they were going to repair (this lens, not the camer suffered salt-water damage) was going to cost $160 after my discount. However, parts from Japan were of unknown delivery date, so they replaced the lens for $160 with a new 16-35/2.8II, refurbished but who cares.

I'm guessing a Mk3 you are basically going to have to replace everything internally, which I bet will run you close to $1500-2k since the CPS discount is now down to only 30% If not more....

Here is how I see lets say you can get it for $300. First you have to know if it was fresh water. Even if he tells you it was its a 50/50 guess if he is telling the truth. Then you know that canon is gonna charge you between $300 k $1000 to repair it . What are used 5 d2s going for here? I figure you will have a 25% chance of having a working camera for around $1300 or so what is canon selling recon 5d2s for.
