Hey Bob,

Expedition?

Your first image is the best here. I like what you were going for in #2 with working the sun like that, but the huge round lens flare hurts the shot. Also the foot prints in #2 do not help it, but the lens flare is the biggest issue to me. Blend that out and #2 will be very nice.

Jim, It did feel like an expedition in Saudi or Sahara. As soon as I got out of the car, a woman in Arabic black covering her completely from head to toes. I was disoriented for a while, wondering where I was until two men got out of the car from the other side. They went to the dunes and kind of playing. 'they let her walk on the dunes and took pics from a drone!!!!
BTW, I just threw in the second pic to see. Just curious, unusual. There wasn't enough contrast to do.

I like the first image too. The layers work nicely here.

The first one is especially nice. I don't think the footprints detract; to the contrary, for me they add life to the image.

Thank you all for looking. It was worth the hike on the slippery sands.

Lovely shots I see here! Both shots have their different styles.
I know what it is like.. hiking the sand dunes.
Now I enjoy your wonderful shots from my comfy chair!
Thanks.

Bob, 1st image is the winner here. Like the crop too.

I would try to "fix" the 2nd with Jim's suggestion.
I have had some success with using my thumb to block sun for a couple of image, then blend in from layers of all.

Compositionally, both seem pretty interesting to me. The blue interpretation of the second is interesting and unusual. Looks to me like the first was shot late in the day from the road and the second shot in the morning looking back at the parking lot, right? I agree that the panoramic crop works well for both of these.

To my eyes - and I've looked on two calibrated monitors - the color in the first one seems over-saturated and unnaturally warm, particularly in the brightest areas of the dunes. It almost looks to me like the very brightest spot might even have been a bit over-exposed, as it has that look of a red channel being a bit blown out.

(I have shot in this area and roughly of this spot many times late in the day, and I understand that tricky nature of the light and color, especially the sometimes strong blue tones that you'll get out of those mountains in the distance. An alternative to pushing the color balance, already warm from afternoon light, towards a hotter balance can be to use the hue/saturation/luminosity controls to selectively reduce just the blue a bit.)

Take care,

Dan

Lovely light and colours in the 1st image. Really like the warm yellow contrasting with the cool blue.

The 2nd shot has that ugly lens flare that really really pops into your eyes.

Actually, both were taken early morning. I still remember the warmth of morning light. tnhe first picture was taken few seconds after the second.

I wish I had more time for the second pic. It was an instant idea when I saw the light picking from behind the mountains. One second window chance for the picture!

OK, I can see that you could have been behind the dunes for the first shot. It looks a lot, both foreground and main subject, like a view that one can get with a long lens for an area along the road that isn't at the parking lot, with the Amargosa Range (aka Grapevine Mountains) beyond the dunes. Despite having shot there quite a few times I'm having difficulty figuring out how the terrain lines up that way at sunrise. But you were there and I wasn't... ;-)

BTW, I like the inclusion of the bit of vegetation at the bottom of the frame.
