Well Zeiss said it would bring 35mm format up to medium format standards. The problems for me is that I have heavily invested in Zeiss lenses for EOS mount and there is no sign of a Canon camera that will give resolution that makes this lens worth buying. I don't want to buy a Nikon just to make use of this lens.

Manual focus is much easier with a Scharf lens. Don't dismiss it until you've tried it.

Doesn't really help if you can't tell if the subject is properly in focus. We don't all have 20-20 vision.

I don't think you will have to wait much longer, maybe 12 months at very most. Canon will respond, but they like to take their frikkin' time about these things.

I would like to try MF with the Scharf. I am not great at MF through a VF, but I would expect if it has a high degree of sharpness & contrast, it will be easier to MF than some (all the) other crappy f/1.4's out there.

The Scharf. I want one... Sigh.

^^ another case of a huge zeiss lens with a tiny A7r hanging off the back of it its a great thing, I just wonder about tripod mounting.

I think it would be fine Mike. I believe the metabones adapter has a lens foot, so you'd mount the lens to the tripod just like when using super-telephotos on DSLRs. But, that was one of the first questions I had too.

Even if Canon does make a high-res body soon, I'm not sure if the A7R wouldn't be a better fit for the Otus 55mm anyway. The A7R's built-in EVF (with available focus-peaking) helps make the A7R a very promising camera for manual-focus lenses.

Awesome! The only thing not-awesome about the Otus 55mm is the 55mm focal length. If it were 28 or 35mm this would be a lot easier purchase decision for me.

If it were 85mm or 135mm I'd consider trading my 200 f2 vr2 for one!

Is there something wrong with the ZF.2 APO 135/2? By all accounts it is a fantastic lens.

The 200 f2 is sweeeeeet, However, the 135 is hard to beat even by the 200 f2. Granted manual focus but you don't have to wait for an Otus 135. The current 135 APO f2 is already there. Just 65mm short of your 200

I notice that the Otus 55/1.4 is almost exactly the same size and weight as my Mamiya 645 A 200/2.8 APO, which is not an especially compact 200/2.8 lens.

The 135 APO is a great lens. IQ is comparable to the 200 f2. I own both.

even on a 5d3 it would do better, what 50 1.4 delivers good contrast even center frame on a 5D3? and don't even look at the edges even on 'just' a 5D3 and don't forget the longitudinal CA mess the curent 50 1.4 are and that shows even on a 4MP FF camera, this one is APO. So you hardly need some non-existent Canon body for this to show it's optical prowess.

of course this one is also $4000 and MF, but those are other points

I'm seriously impressed by this lens. Corner and Center performance on this thing is still really good wide open. How much of a difference is it really going from f/5.6 to f/4 though? Would it be noticeable? I would purchase this just for its rendering at f/1.4 and f/4 even on a 5D3. I also haven't seen any CA on this lens I assume because it's APO. What are the "special glass" elements made of? Moondust?

As you can see in the table, the resolution increases by about 1 percent, so that won't be noticeable. You'll just see more DOF at f/5.6.

Looks like Sony has just the answer for you: A7R.

Lenstip has just tested the 135/2 ZF and it looks as awesome as the Otus or better (discounting the spec differences). I honestly don't see how one can improve on THIS:
