Recently, I expressed interest in an item here. The original post didn't say anything about not accepting offer although it listed an asking price. So, I sent a PM asking the seller in a friendly way whether he/she would entertain offers. I didn't send any offer yet but I figured, since some sellers would rather ignore "low ball offers", I would ask first. The PM although read, was just ignored. In a similar fashion but a few days earlier, I also expressed interest in completing a face-to-face transaction with a local seller. The same thing happened; it was just ignored and later on deleted.

No price was mentioned at all in my PM inquiries. Is that really that hard to extend a common courtesy to your fellow FMers? A simple answer, like "sorry, no" would be sufficient. Sorry, I am just venting....

I second this.

I've had lots of wonderful interactions here but I do find it frustrating to reply in detail to another member's question and not even get an acknowledgement. In my experience it is definitely a minority that behaves this way,but how much trouble is it to reply "No thanks" or "I'll pass"

Second & third this. Common courtesy should be the norm for all members, but like you both mentioned, I've only had a few non responses in all of my dealings.

Agreed -- but am not surprised. Such behavior comes with the territory; indeed, I am pleased with how positive my experiences have been using FM in both C&C and buy/sell forums.

Well, I should apologize to anyone I have forgot to send a "no, thanks" to. Sometimes I think about an offer for a day or two, then forget to PM back.

So if I have done that to anyone, I'm sorry. Not trying to diss anyone, just occasionally spacey.

Agreed, though personally I've had little experience here with being ignored. I like to think the good manners usually on display here on the B & S are common amongst FM members.

Good topic.......I sell for a living and communications are the utmost in importance whether you sell now or later.

Since everyone loves to text and no one likes to talk anymore I too find it hard to believe some of the poor communications amongst FM members though most are just wonderful except that 'spacey' girl mco-970

Joshua I hope you don't mind this being added but since we are a photographic community I also think that photos of items for sale should be mandatory, it backs up the description and signifies that it is in their possession also.

The worst offenders are the ones that decide to 'price police' on someones listing, now that frosts me

There will always be the good and the 'not so good' but replies are as you say...........courtesy and that goes a long way IMO
Dang, need to sell something so I can hit 100!

I second this Karl. I am taken aback sometimes with some members arrogance who feel they don't "need" to post photos of their item in question because they are sellers of their word. In fact one I can think of refuses to post photos, even upon request.
Then you have many others whose product shots are high end catalogue quality. I actually get inspired by how good they are and how much trouble some folks here go to showcasing some of their stuff for sale.

As an occasional purchaser here I consider myself very fortunate to have had the pleasure of dealing with some of FM's best. However, there have been a few occasions of late where communication and, um, "picture policy" have been, uh, lacking, to which I take the simple approach, "I've reconsidered my interest in your item." If folks can't be bothered to communicate or send along information or pics, well, I can't be bothered to purchase their item...there's nothing I need "so bad".

"Kindness goes a long way in this world.", my folks used to say.

As a general contractor, I have on many occasion had the experience where I have contacted a potential customer with an estimate, only to have that customer not extend the courtesy of a simple reply. In my business it is necessary to know which jobs are secured for the purpose of scheduling. It has gotten worse over the years as there is a general disregard for " common courtesy". I have learned to not take it personally. You just have to accept the fact that some people are just plain jerks. I have been lucky enough throughout the years to be in a position where I generally don't have to deal with these idiots in the event that they ultimately call me back. If i do decide to do business with them, it's usually on my terms, not theirs.
As my lawyer says" Its the price of doing business". When you either buy or sell on this Forum, you are " Conducting business" and when you are doing business some people are just plain #%+holes.

I will disagree. I prefer to see recent photos taken with the camera or lens. Photos of the actual camera or lens prove nothing. If the seller is dishonest, the photos can be photoshopped to cover flaws, and the photos do not prove that they are even in the possession of the seller.

If a seller says his camera or lens is in a 10 or 9+ condition, I know that it looks just the same as all the photos on the web of that same camera or lens when new.

If a buyer does not believe me when I say the camera/lens looks just like a new one, they can look elsewhere.
What is arrogant about that? Better to base the condition of the item on the word of an honest seller than photos that prove nothing, IMO.

Scammers post fake images of items they are selling all the time. Did it help the buyers that got scammed? No.

#1, Photos of the actual item does prove something, It shows the actual item. There are many new photographers AND new forum members who may not know what every camera or camera accessory looks like. I don't. I enjoy looking at other members products.
I was looking to get into m4/3 recently and had NO idea where to start, Fuji this, Nex that, Oly 5, Rx-1. I had no clue what all those looked like. Fortunately members selling their M4/3 products showcased them well, very well, so it made my decision making easy.

#2, It's a courtesy to other members. It's just called being nice and helpful. That's one of the reasons that ALL of my camera gear I have bought from members of this forum. And will continue to do so.

#3, Quote"If a buyer does not believe me when I say the camera/lens looks just like a new one, they can look elsewhere. What is arrogant about that?" end Quote. See #2.
As a seller, you're not doing a buyer a favor. They, as a buyer, are doing the favors by buying your FS items.
But that's just me. I treat others like I would like to be treated.

Wrong. As I already explained, you have no idea if it is the actual item for sale or a copy of an image the seller has downloaded from somewhere.

As a buyer, you should be researching your item before buying it here or anywhere else. Googling those cameras will bring up photos and reviews, and will give you a lot more info than looking at a seller's photos of the same item.

#2, It's a courtesy to other members. It's just called being nice and helpful. That's one of the reasons that ALL of my camera gear I have bought from members of this forum. And will continue to do so.

And if the camera the seller is selling is his only camera, it can be a hassle for him to photograph it. And when he does, the photos look just like the camera listed at B&H. Surprise, surprise.

As a seller, you're not doing a buyer a favor. They, as a buyer, are doing the favors by buying your FS items.

IYO. A FM seller giving me a good deal is doing me a favor, IMO.

I generally post images of the items I sell, even though I don't require a seller to do likewise when it serves no purpose for me.

Just a quick scan of the first page of B&S shows a number of sellers with items for sale and no photos of the items.

And their status feedback is GREAT, not arrogant.

I understand your thoughts Tony but what does a picture prove, how is that tied to the particular lens being sold that it came from it? I could take one of your shots and put it up with my lens Of course that would help my sale

By the way the arrogant part was the 'no reply' part Photography is a visual experience, most of us are driven by it How many times do you end up seeing in those threads you are referring to someone post and say, 'got any pictures of it'?

Interesting, a lot of those posts now have pictures. Also, most are still available for quite a long time. Maybe pics would help them to sell faster
