MalbikEndar wrotePutting something into a locked box locked to a pipe...that pretty much screams "I am really valuable."

The vast majority of hotel room thefts are opportunistic. Locking something to a pipe is going to prevent that and make it much more difficult to take without the use of knives/bolt cutters. It's not like they won't check/take your bags if they are loose in your room is it ? They are there to do just that and if they are that determined (knives/bolt cutters) they are going to get it anyway.

As said, there are usually small safes in rooms in S.E and N.E Asia, good for a body and a few smallish lenses. Using them & the cable on the bag I have never had anything stolen.

I was thinking something like a kryptonite cable. They are hard to cut. Used the classic U-locks since the late 1980's. The motorcycle cable lock is a bit ridiculous in size though. Reminds me of when we would tie our cocker spaniel leash to the "elephant rope" when I was a kid.
