p.1 #1 · external desktop hard drives or solid state flash drives....

Hi, I own 2 iomega home media network hard drives T12APK (3TB usable 2.7TB) Looking for something faster and not getting hot so easily. Any advice as to that is greatly appreciated.

Solid state drives will be very pricey. Not sure why your drives are getting so hot...

Because they are in poorly ventilated cases most likely. It seems to be quite common in this class of products that style trumps functionality in this way. LaCie used to be especially bad. Basically, these are products that are not to be left running, just turned on when being used and powered down the rest of the time.

My recommendation would be to either buy a proper multi-drive NAS with fans to cool the drives or stuff your drives into an old PC and install FreeNAS.

I just started using LaCie blade runner--4TB & USB 3.0. It runs cool and quiet (no fan).

I agree with all that.

I'm probably buying one of the recently announced Synology products - probably a DS414. Also considering the Lenovo ix4-300D (not as high-featured but a lot less expensive).

Hi Guys... sorry to react so late but had other urgent business to attend to

Thanks a lot for your inputs! I will be researching the new Synology products - let you know how I am getting on...

I just picked up a QNAP TS-412 (4-bay NAS) on a great deal from B&H last week, and would be glad to post up some thoughts once I get it set up properly.

An easier setup would be the DROBO. There are deals out there at the moment.
