Curious if anyone has any idea. I'd suspect 1-2 lights, maybe an overhead softbox, something in the back. I'm not 1/10 the photographer this guy is, but it's fun to aspire to greatness

You can see the lighting setup in the catchlights - it's a big box up and camera right as a main light, and a small, hard light camera left for subtle rim (you can see the rim pretty clearly on the subject's right cheek in the first image).

There could be a third light on the background, but it looks to me like it's just white paper illuminated by the main light

Plus a hard light on axis to the left of the camera for fill (see the dot as a second catchlight). There is also a reflector low right. See images 12/15 and 15/15.

Post processing looks like a film emulation preset, desaturated/muted colors with a bit of grain added.

Awesome! Thanks. So "big box" meaning a softbox or softlighter of some kind? By "hard light", what do you mean -- monolight, speedlite? I've just graduated - I feel - from lighting 101 and am trying to take a stab at a few more complicated things.

For gear, I've got an AB1600, a few speedlites, and a couple of modifiers. I'm about to return my 50" Westcott Apollo softbox for a 60" Softlighter since it seems way more dynamic.

Thanks very much for the input - very appreciated!

This post explains it a little: http://strangephoto.wordpress.com/2012/11/07/this-kind-of-poverty-spencer-murphy/

The New York Institute of Photography used to include a female head, nicknamed "Shirley," with their Professional Photography course, but they don't do that anymore.

I got the one shown above for just a couple of bucks at Hobby Lobby. It's not flesh colored with painted eyes and lips like Shirley was, but it works fine - maybe even better -- for seeing the effects of lighting angles, modifiers, multi-light setups, etc.

I had one years ago (1980's) that I picked up from a cosmetology school student ... likely the same as Shirley.

I have one, but I'm tired of doing self portraits.
