Purple is what the 180 ED does. That's reality.

At long distance, the AI-S 180/2.8 ED still is an amazing lens. That night, I was shooting with the AF-S 70-200/2.8 VRII as well : the AI-S was far better than the VRII zoom-lens.

D800, AI-S 180/2.8 ED, 2 sec, f/2.8, 50 ISO. Tripod.

I have the 180 2.8 ED AF which I think is the first of the AF models. It does look like a purple tint on the glass. I've only had one session with it on my D800E on a gloomy day

e.g. D800E

but used it often on my D7000

It's a very good lens and excellent value on the used market as they're usually not that expensive.

The 180mmED AIS is one of my favorite lenses. It's sharp wide open and has a real pleasing bokeh. Plus you kind find excellent copies for under $400!

Now this was shot using my D600, and from what I've seen from others using it on their D800's there's no difference.

I owned the AIS version in the past. For not to much more I think its worth it to get the AF version....Thanks for all the responses
