p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tripod - alternative to 055PROB?

I have an aluminium Manfrotto 055PROB which has served me well but am considering getting a lighter alternative. I am 190cm tall so it would need to be at least as tall as my 055 and solid enough to use with my 500F4 and stable enough for long exposure landscape work. I guess carbon fibre is what I would need to go for for the weight saving? Any suggestions would be welcome - my local camera store doesn't have a good range so its hard for me to physically view tripods and make a decision that way. Thanks.

are you currently using your 500/4 with the 055? and do you mean that you need it stable enough for long exposure landscape work with the 500/4 or with a wider lens?

i did a slow buying up thing with tripods that probably cost me more money than it would if i had gotten something right in the first place. i ended up with a rrs series 3 set of legs. great stuff. ive done 3min exposures in terrible wind and got no shake on the image. solid stuff. but expensive. a lot of people around here like feisol systematic legs. that would be a good choice as well. someone else will know the exact leg number

Long exposures is just landscape stuff not the 500mm. I'll look at the RRS tripods - I have a lot of their other gear but its expensive to get it out here to Aus.

Well Gitzo is an alternative but prices for new ones are now up in the RRS range. Benro and Feisol both make systematic types of stable tripods that are not top tier in quality but pretty close; very good value for money. Benro is from mainland China and Feisol from Taiwan. I use Benro and Gitzo tripods and some of the parts are interchangeable as Benros are Gitzo copies.

I chose the Feisol 3442 over a Manfrotto 055 CXPRO when i was shopping. Slightly more expensive, but definitely more stable.

The Manfrotto 055 is also available in CF.

The Manfrotto 055 and many of the other tripods that have been mentioned here are not stable enough for a 500/4 IS lens (IMO) Especially not when raising those tripods to fit a 190 cm person.
A tripod without center-column (Gitzo Systematic style) would be a lot better. Brand depends on how much you like to spend.

Add a sandbag to your kit - if you haven't already.

Thanks. I've checked out the Gitzo systematic tripods as you suggest Lars and they look like just the thing I should be looking at.

I am 175 CM and use a Feisol 3372 regularly. I usually shorten the bottom legs so I am able to see the top readout on the camera. I have a pair of 8 pound Dynatrans that are extremely stable, but just too heavy for my aging bones to carry any distance anymore. Now I just use the Feisol for long glass. It's totally stable and impervious to wind. I used it in 60 knot winds last year without problem. Crazy seagulls were still flying, though.

I just checked out the Feisol 3442. Wow that is light! Same height as my 055PROB but less than half the weight at 1.05kg (the 055 is 2.42kg). Feisol looks like nice gear.

Yes the 3442 is light. I'd never seen one until very recently at the PhotoPlus expo in NYC. I spoke with the service manager at their booth and he was very reasonable about a couple of drawbacks I feel the tripod has. Looks like it's very good value.

The 3442 is a nice and light tripod. But I personally would not buy it to use it with my 500/4 IS lens

I'd be interested in hearing about what drawbacks you feel the 3442 has.

Well we spoke about the short leg collar and Feisol stating they were using improved adhesive, and also the angle of the legs.
