Those portraits are so beautiful I don't bother with 100% crop or sharpness. The rendering is so nice. Just need to make sure it's in focus (no front or back-focus) and let the lens handle the rest. Too bad I cannot afford this very unique lens

That's already three quarters of the battle. My lens is at +13. Very expensive timepiece. If you shoot people, this is THE lens. Hard to find general purpose uses... the 50 1.8G is drastically more versatile.

Although seeing Jason's shots with the 135DC, I have to admit I'm lusting for it juuust a little. I'm trying to decide now if I want the 135DC or 70-200/4.

I'm seriously thinking of replacing my 28G with a 20G... decisions decisions...

I think the best trinitry will be: 24 1.4G for landspace, 58 1.4G for everyday using and 85 1.4G for portrait.

My realistic trinity using this lens, meaning the stuff I actually have money for, would be the 28 f1.8 G, 58 f1.4 G, and the 70-200 f4. That would be a pretty great system to carry around.

this is a nice trio right here that i am contemplating on acquiring that damn 200 f2..though i might have to sell off my zoom trinity to get it.

but funny how everything evolves around the 58G! I think of all the 50ish lenses, it is the G.O.A.T!!

Everything revolves around the 58 because it is a bastard focal length. It's not a bad thing, it's just how it is.

i hear yah.. i always had a hole in the middle of ultra wide and semi long (200mm)...never gave too much thought to something in the middle since i thought my 24-70 would take care of it...the attraction of such a oddball FL does open up a new can of funky worms, thats for sure.

I feel pretty good right now with the 14-24mm, 58mm and my 70-200mm.

I throw in my Sigma 35mm into the mix from time to time although I doing everything I can to justify keeping that lens around since I use it so rarely.

58mm f/1.4 vs 200mm f/2.8 comparison. I was a bit surprised by this comparison myself...

at 1.4, the 58 is plenty sharp...though the 70-200 really give a more flattering (IMO) perspective, FL and its really sharp.

but that swirly of the 58

The thing that gets me is how much similar the bokeh SIZE is.
Quality, compression and shape of the bokeh is different.
I was usually a fan of the LARGER bokeh but It seems that it’s not that much larger, unless I go all in and get the 200/f2VRII

But heck, now I see why so many people say that it’s “3D looking” kind of images. When you look really close, the focused subject is not the same as OOF elements... I can’t even explain lol

I actually like the 58mm even more now, especially after viewing this comparison.

Has anyone used this Voigtlander Nokton SL-II 58 mm F/1.4? How does it compare to the nikon 58mm G?

I would hope that future Nikon lenses follow the same aesthetics intention as this lens seems to.

i think the 35mm f1.4G had the same engineer for the 58G. There are interviews with him regarding the 35mm and even then he said something to the effect that it wasnt about sharpness but how the lens painted the image overall. been looking to trade up my sig35A for a 35mm f1.4 for a while since prices are dropping on it due to the internets saying it isnt 'sharp'

There'd be a backlash. With the high MP bodies, there is a new breed of pixelpeeping taking place.

Where are you seeing prices drop on it? I've been considering it in combination with a 70-200 f4 for a vacation setup.

now now I wish there was a 35G thread/post that showcases the similarities

I think the focal length 35mm and 58mm are too close to each other. 35mm is usually paired with an 85mm.
